pearls look newest when colored in pastel
tinges to highlight subtle dress hues. The
sautoir, a long chain of seed pearls ending in

are voicing their preferences on color and style.
There is a trend away from rigid cookie-cutter
styles and toward a choose-your-own ap-
proach. One bridal consultant suggests that
brides dictate color and length, leaving it up
to the maids to select a style most flattering to
their figures, and in keeping with their bud-
gets. "Rainbow parties" are another option,
with maids in the same style but in contrast-
ing colors or coordinating prints.
Veronica Cifone, contemporary bridal-par-
ty designer for Bill Levkoff, sees a more ro-
mantic influence, shifting away from two-piece
tailored suit looks and toward flowing, off-the-
shoulder ball gowns and slim columns. With
the surge in tulle wedding gowns, some brides
are carrying the ballerina look over into their
bridal party with floral bustlers atop white tulle
skirts.
Clean shapes worked into floral chintz prints
are spring perennials, "but it's when you opt
for something different like a black 'tuxedo
suit with satin lapels and side skirt panel (mi-
nus the tie), that attendants really stand out,"
says bridesmaids' buyer Marilyn Silverman of
New York's Kleinfeld. More black-tie influ-
ences include white tuxedo dresses with hal-
ter necklines and bare backs. Black-and-white
