Since 1971

he new Detroit Zoo di-
rector, Ron Kagan,
was introduced at a De-
troit Zoological Society
benefit on Jan. 20. The event
opened the three-week exhib-
it of Andy Warhol's Endan-
gered Species at the Somerset
Collection.
Dr. Kagan began his posi-
tion at the Detroit Zoo on Jan.
4 and is the former curator of
the Dallas Zoo and served in
a similar capacity at the
Jerusalem Zoo. He is a leader
in wildlife preservation and
intends to promote conserva-
tion at the zoo.
"We have a strong commu-
nity support here, and we will
advocate wildlife and habitat
protection," Dr. Kagan said.
He wants to ignite the inter-
est of young people and have
a creative, innovative and
meaningful experience for all
the people who come to the
zoo.
Endangered Species is a
portfolio of 10 silkscreen
prints produced by Warhol in
1983 in collaboration with
Ronald Feldman Fine Arts
Inc. and printmaker Rubert
Jasen Smith. The vivid por-
traits are of animals that face
extinction.
Suzy Farbman came to
the event dressed appropri-
ately in a leopard silk blouse.
Her husband, Burt, just wore
his usual power suit. Mr.
and Mrs. Gary Wasserman
and Doug and Sydell

Ron Kagan

Schubot were also spotted in
the crowd.
If an original Warhol print
is not in your budget, the Na-
ture Company sells a portfolio
suitable for framing at $13.95.
The Detroit Institute of Arts
Museum Shop, also at the
Somerset Collection, has
Andy Warhol boxed notes and
books at reasonable prices.
