"It was the most thril- ing experience of my life- time," Ms. Schaefer said. "You really sensed a simi- lar feeling as you did when JFK took office." During the four-day festivities, David and Doreen Hermelin, Robert and Anita Naftaly, Avern and Lois Cohn, Zina and Michael Kramer, Marc and Ellen Whitefield, Lanie Pincus, Faylene and Larry Owen, Bunny and Michael Kratchman, Leon and Heidi Cohan, Sid and Diane Lutz, Al and Judith Holtz and other local Jewish Democrats had a lot of fun. Many attended meet- ings of different Jewish caucus groups. The American-Israel Public Affairs Committee hosted a breakfast. And the National Jewish Demo- cratic Coalition hosted an event as well. Ms. Pincus, inspired by the Year of the Woman theme of the '92 cam- paign, went to an EM- ILY's List luncheon. Some 4,200 supporters Of the Democratic, pro-choice political action committee attended the lunch, in- cluding most female mem- bers from the House and the genate. "There was not a dry eye in the place," Ms. Pincus said. Ms. Owen, who co- chaired Michigan's Clin- ton fund-raising efforts with her husband, former East Lansing Mayor Larry Owen, went to D.C. as a special presidential guest. The Owens co-chaired the inaugural balls. Now that the parties are over, Ms. Owen said the experi- ence feels like it was all a dream. In fact, on the day of the inauguration, she and Mr. Owen were seated in the third row in front of the stage. As "God Bless America" was playing, Mr. Clinton saw her and said, "Thank you, Faylene." The couple raised $1.5 million for the Democratic Party and Bill Clinton — the most money ever in Michigan for a Democratic candidate. For all her hard work, Ms. Owen figured she deserved a little fun. "I got my picture taken with all of the stars," she said. The Hermelins found a new friend, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the famed sex expert, who drove around with them in a rented limousine from party to party. Actually, "she found us," Mr. Her- melin said. With 300,000 people standing nearby, there was lots of opportunity for good shmoozing. "When you are standing at the Lincoln Memorial with so many people all around you who are feel- ing inspired, you believe maybe there is a chance for the country to pull itself together," Mr. Her- melin said."I am very_ hopeful that his basic instincts are good, and that he cares a great deal about Israel. "The general attitude is one of great optimism," Mr. Hermelin said. "Now the party is over." ❑ ( Family Activity Enacts Survival Of Sephardim RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER attending amilies Sunday's event at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park should brace themselves for a trip through time to the Golden Age of Spain. It was an age when Jews prospered as artists and businessmen. It was also an era when Jews could prac- tice their religion with little fear. Then came the Inquisi- tion in 1233. The Roman Catholic church forced Jews to convert to Christianity, leave the country or die. Jewish families in metro- _( politan Detroit can relive the experience of Sephardic Jews at this weekend's event, "From Routes to Roots: A Family Sephardic Journey."
