President's Column by Eli Scherr KEREN KAYEMETH LEISRAEL e are all aware of the tremendous financial burdens placed in Israel these last few years due to the homecom- ing of tens of thousands of Ethiopian and Russian Jews. At the same time, our domestic recession, which has sent bank rates below 4%, has put financial pressures on many of us individually at the very time when the fi- nancial demands in Israel are greatest. For many of us who rely on the income stream from our investments, the precipitous drop in interest rates has creat- ed a very real, very human problem. Our spending patterns need to be curbed and, in some cases, we may unfortunate- ly be dropping below what we call the comfort level. At times like this, we obviously cast around for the vehicle that would provide us with the best possible return; but in doing so we must avoid the pitfalls of risky investments and unscrupulous venturers. We cannot afford to risk losing our capital because it is that capital which provides the income stream that we need to pay our annual liv- ing expenses. How can we deal with this problem? An opportunity exists to place ourselves in a 'win, win, win" situation. A Charitable Remainder Trust can provide an advantageous annual income, remove uncertainty from your ongoing investment decisions, and establish a substan- tial charitable donation with the Jewish National Fund for the benefit of our people in Israel. Here's how it works: You take the $100,000 (or $20,000 or $40,000, or whichever number) which is currently in a certificate of deposit and upon maturity donate it to the JNF. In return, JNF will establish a fixed annuity payable quarterly for the rest of your life. The amount of the payment will depend on the amount donated and your age, but the rate of return will be much higher than any comparable CD available in the marketplace today. And the good news doesn't stop there! By establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust, you are making a charitable gift for which the I.R.S. will allow you a charitable gift tax deduction from taxable income. In summary, establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust with JNF will: 1. Provide a stable and reliable income source you will never outlive. 2. Reduce your exposure to Federal Estate Tax. 3. Furnish resources to enable JNF to continue its much needed work for our fellow Jews in Israel. Sounds too good to be true? Want to find out more? This concept clearly has complexities that cannot be detailed in this column. Do yourself a favor! Call the JNF Office at 557-6644 and ask for Ed Rosenthal to find out more.
