lit TRUNK SHOWING OF >- \/ one-term Republican con- gressman, said UNH was ;forced to locate its proposed Israeli campus in the ad- /ilinistered territories "due to the refusal of Israeli regulatory authorities to \ q,rant approval for new in- rstitutions of higher edu- cation inside their country." When he announced the ;,-stablishment of the school inNovember, Mr. DeNardis called the Elkana area one which "demand for higher "education far outstrips supp- /-education ly." The UNH branch cam- pus, therefore, would help --fleet that demand. Mr. DeNardis emphasized that "the university's bran- ch in Elkana will be com- mitted to equal access to ed- ucational and employment ' opportunities for all ap- plicants — regardless of ; race, creed, color, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability." He continued, "Our hope is that, by studying and learn- ing together at our branch, the people of this region will e ultimately brought closer together in all ways." This hope, however, was criticized as "naive" by the American-Arab Anti- > Discrimination Committee. Amiram Goldblum of / Peace Now in Israel agreed 1 \_ with this criticism. He was ;-quoted by the Jerusalem Post as saying, "The only Arabs able to get into the `, university will be those who /- come to clean." ) Mr. Goldblum is credited with raising the issue to na- ,>Thional status in Israel, 1 garnering the support of such figures as the \ outspoken left-wing Edu- ' cation Minister Shulamit > Aloni. Though Mr. DeNardis did lot say when the branch might open, UNH spokes- woman Toni Blood said the ; plans were not being / cancelled. "We are planning to do it. It's just a matter of how and when." In his statement, Mr. DeNardis said he intends to engage in further talks with Israeli officials and educa- tional representatives, Arab institutions and Palestinian and other interested groups \ on the question of location / --)"as well as other relevant issues." Dr. Richard Morrison, pro- fessor of physics at UNH, who was named rector of the new branch campus, has set- tled with his wife in Tel • Aviv. According to Blood, UNH has no plans to bring him back. "He's still there and we expect him to remain there," she said.
