THE JEWISH NEWS "Manhunt." "I wanted to be success- ful in that milieu of rock- and-roll pop music," said Mr. Cotler, who opened his own recording studio. "That particular year I wrote about 20 songs, all with the same kind of beat and subject matter. `Manhunt' was the 14th. "I took the songs and would go to publishers and other kinds of produc- ers interested in buying songs." After achieving that hit, he decided to make anoth- er career change. "I got burnt out getting up in the morning and turning my amp up to 11 and writing another tune about dancing all night or falling in love or falling out of love," said Mr. Cotler, who is married and has two sons. "I never lived that life, and I was thrust into singing about a culture that I wasn't really a part of." Through his recording studio, which also is used N N His career has spanned rock and liturgical. by other artists, he has completed five albums of contemporary Jewish music which he offers for sale at concerts. A cantori- al soloist with a Reform. congregation in Woodland Hills, he schedules out-of- town performances around temple obligations. One of his goals is to open marketplaces where people can buy the type of ethnic compositions he —\ presents. "There is a great market for Jewish music, but N there is a limited market- place," commented Mr. Cotler, who wants music stores to set up sections'=< for Jewish music. "It's a hard thing to sell if you're not in the business your- self." After finding out about Mr. Cotler by participat- ing in his program, stu-c-Z\ dents voiced their enthusi- asm about what he was trying to accomplish. Beth Bernstein of Congregation < Shaarey Zedek summed it up: "I think it was a good experience working with —\ people from other congre- gations, expressing their views on Chanukah in a creative way." 0
