Our revisit to Carl's Chop House on Grand River, after too many years, was as warm as a welcome party. Owner Frank Passalac- qua helped us off with our coats and escorted us to our table, making us feel special. "We've been to many res- taurants since our last dining experience at Carl's but never received that unique, red carpet treatment. The relish tray is exactly the way we remembered it and so is the butter-soft filet mignon. The seafood and prime rib dishes of our companions were superb. "This downtown landmark is. worth revisiting. Unlike some other old favorites, it re- mains unchanged. Passalac- qua urged us not to stay away so long and we won't. Carl's is like a tried and true friend who lasts. "The new Outback restau- rant on Orchard Lake Road and Maple puts you in an Aussie mood with awesome food. A picture of Crocodile Dundee overlooks this dark- ened, pub-like dining spot with an Australian motif. If you're not into spicy food, you can order your meal not highly seasoned. You're not sacrificing flavor. "Everything is tasty, from the barbecued shrimp ap- petizer to Caesar salad to shrimp fettuccini or perfectly done steak. Our waiter, Steven, was attentive and helpful and the manager came over to our table to see if everything was to our lik- ing. A lot of folks are talking about the Outback and it's not overrated. "If you're tired of the same old low cholesterol diet, try the lamb chops at Pyramids on Southfield Road just north of 12 Mile. You'll be greeted by Khalil, who does all the cooking, even for catered par- ties of 300 guests. The homemade soup and salad are palate pleasing. Pyramids features other Mideastern dishes which are wholesome and satisfying. "Some hotel dining rooms are disappointing and over- priced. Not so Stacy's Sea Grille in the Troy Marriott on West Big Beaver. Casual elegance sets the mood for col- ossal shrimp dishes or shrimp and steak combinations. Steaks, chicken and veal chops are wood grilled. "Located on beautiful Lake St. Clair, Gino's Surf on East Jefferson has been a favorite dining spot for more than two decades. Gino's specializes in Italian cuisine and features fresh seafood brought in dai- ly. This family restaurant has a friendly, casual atmosphere. There's nothing as tranquil as gazing at the water while din- ing on good food. "The lively, sophisticated Ristorante di Modesta on Northwestern Highway is a continental experience in fine Italian dining. The food is perfectly seasoned, light with just subtle hints of anchovy or tomato sauce. Nothing is overpowering. A half-dozen varieties of pasta, seafood and veal dominate the menu. "If you're in the mood for something different, try the Cadieux Cafe on Cadieux in Detroit. It's the only place in town that offers Belgian rab- bit and famous steamed mussels. The jumbo steamed shrimp are highly recom- mended and the Belgian cookies in this old checker- tableclothed family restau- rant are among the greatest. "The decor at Ernesto's in Plymouth is English country inn, but the food is definitely Italian. The portions are generous and the large vari- ety of dishes are flavorful. You'll want to go back again. "Peppina's Ristorante on Dix Road in Lincoln Park features a decor of beautiful crystals. You'll get a quick course in geology as you ad- mire the amethyst and other stones gracing the walls. The pastas are rich and home- made and plentiful. The cheese ravioli is large enough to feed a family and the dishes are bathed in rich and mellow sauces. Desserts are sinful. "If you're out Ann Arbor way, you've got to try Zinger- man's Delicatessen on Detroit Street. It's crowded from dawn to dusk. The sand- wiches are some of the heart- iest anywhere. More than a deli, Zingerman's has an over- whelming array of carryout from mustards to three kinds of knishes. Great desserts are served in Zingerman's spot next door. "Ann Arbor residents also enjoy the Prickly Pear Cafe on Main Street. The restau- rant features Southwestern cuisine such as black bean relienos, guacamole and crab cakes with green chile chutney. Desserts are created by pastry chef Mary Miller who co-owns the restaurant with chef/husband Gary Pearce. `The Earle on Washington Street in Ann Arbor is another old standby. The chic dining spot serves traditional dishes from the provinces of France and Italy. Specialties are pasta, veal, chicken and seafood, Pacific Coast salmon and leg of lamb. The wine list is among the most complete in southeast Michigan. "The Shanghai Cafe in La Mirage shopping plaza on Northwestern Highway offers innovative Chinese cuisine. It's battling against a mall The meals range from chic to senior discount. that is completely empty ex- cept for this comfortable, cafe- style establishment. "Wong's Eatery, Windsor's most popular Chinese restau- rant, is consistently good. Unlike many Oriental dining spots, Wong's is attractively decorated. Some great dishes are prepared to order — mild, medium or hot. "Ciro's on Cass Lake Road in Keego Harbor offers casual Italian dining with delicious, homemade pasta and features veal, fresh broiled fish, steaks and prime rib. "Jane's Place on Lahser Road in Southfield is a testi- monial to its owner, Jane. Her creative centerpieces, table- cloths and other decorative handiwork enhance the in- timate cafe setting. Custo- mers enjoy meals such as Jane's ponzi and other dishes cooked by the talented owner. "Doing lunch or brunch is as much a part of retirement as social security and naps. It's luxury to dine in leisure and style when you're not watching the clock. "At Seros on Northwestern illinklow- -*was*
