quite shocked that our

aron kodesh was a table-

and the Torah lay on it
covered by a large blue
towel. I immediately
wrote to my parents and
asked my father to make
an aron kodesh for the
camp and bring it to
camp on Visitor's Day.
Knowing my father, Jay
Rosenthal, had made
many arks for the shuls
around Detroit, I knew
that he would do it as
well as I knew my own
name. What I didn't
know was the border
guards at the Windsor
Tunnel would be so sus-
picious of the aron
kodesh, they held my
parents up for hours at
the border until the
Windsor rabbi came to
say it was a religious
object and was all right
to let pass through cus-
toms!
I attended Camp
Ramah in Canada for
two years and have many
fond memories of camp. I
often run into people
who were first-year
campers with me and it's
great fun remembering
so-and-so. When I
attended the Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism's convention
this past November at
the Concord Hotel in
New York, I remet a
bunkmate of mine from
1960 who now lives in
Montreal, Canada. She
told me she knew who I
was as soon as she saw
my name on a roster
because she has only
known one Rusty in her
whole life and it had to
be me!
It was with great plea-

sure and excitement that
we sent our daughter
Lauren to Camp Ramah
in Canada for the first
time the summer of
1988. I was absolutely
speechless when we
arrived at camp for
Visitor's Day and the
camp was exactly as I
remembered it from 30
years ago - just 30 years
more use! It was tremen-
dous fun visiting all my
favorite spots with my
daughter but my most
emotional moment was
when Lauren showed me
the aron kodesh that my
dad had made for the
camp and it was still
being used.
I was thrilled beyond
words when, in 1990, I

was asked to be a
Michigan member of the
board of directors of
Camp Ramah in Canada.
Each year, I attend three
board meetings in
Toronto, one at camp in
the summer and one in
November in Michigan. I
see many similarities
and many changes in
Camp Ramah. The camp
population has grown
tremendously - we often
have waiting lists for
many age groups.
