aza — in Hebrew
Azza—dating back to
the 15th century BCE,
continues in world in-
terest today with the an-
nouncement from Jerusalem
of the rounding up of an-
other group of terrorists who
were among the leaders in
threats to the existence of
Israel.
This renewal of deter-
mination to protect the Jew-
ish state is a part of fact,
rumors and concerns which
keep multiplying.
An interesting summary
appears in an important,
timely article about the
many aspects of the Gaza. It
demands consideration. The
article was published as a
special feature by Tom
Hundley in the Jan. 3, 1993,
issue of the Chicago Tribune.
There is nothing new in
the idea of a unilateral
Israeli pullout from Gaza,
where the Palestinian in-
tifada began five years
ago and where its most
violent permutations are
acted out daily. Shimon
Peres had endorsed it in
1990.
The proposal was reviv-
ed ... when health Min-
ister Haim Ramon ...
argued that Israel has no
strategic or political in-
terests in Gaza, that it no
longer can control the
situation there and that
the best way to get out is
to simply go.
Although Rabin rejects
the idea, it holds a certain
appeal to both Israeli .
doves and hawks. Doves
see it as a way out of the
moral morass of the oc-
cupation; hawks think it
would give Israel a freer
hand to retaliate militari-
ly in the vent of attacks
against the Jewish state.
The events which resulted
in continuing Arab terror-
ism and militant actions in
resistance by Israel keep ad-
ding new aspects to Gaza's
importance.
It is because of the above
demand for Jewish concerns
about remaining activists in
the total drama that Gaza's
current status demands
study. Therefore, we turn to
an immediate consideration
of the ancient area's present
status. The following is from
the 1992 edition of the New

Standard Jewish En-

It was the result of the
Egyptian advance into the
Negev in May 1948, and
the Israel offensives of
Oct.-Dec. 1948 which
drove them out of the en-
tire area, with the excep-
tion of the Gaza Strip.
The area remained
under Egyptian rule ac-
cording to the Armistice
Agreement of 1949. The
Gaza Strip became the
focus of military and po-
litical tension in 1955, and
in Nov. 1956, was cap-
tured by Israel forces in
the course of the Sinai
Operation. Under UN and,
especially US pressure,
Israel returned the Gaza
Strip in March 1957 when
Egyptians resumed con-
trol with a UN Emergency
Force stationed along the
border with Israel.
In May 1967 the UN sec-
retary-general U Thant
acceded to a demand by
Nasser to withdraw the
UN force thereby
precipitating the events
leading to the Six-Day
War when the Gaza Strip
again passed under Israel
control. It has been the
scene of frequent unrest.
The 1967 census found
352,260 in the Gaza Strip
of whom 172,520 were
refugees.
The Gaza's very beginn-
ings compel our acquain-
tanceship with it. Therefore,
we turn again, commencing
with ancient times, to the
New Standard Jewish En-
cyclopedia.
GAZA: Ancient Palestin-
ian city of the south

the sea. Commercially it
was noted for its black

In the 12th century, it
was captured by the
Philistines and remained
the most important of
their five coastal cities,
also housing the temple of

In 720 BCE it was
annexed by Sargon of
Assyria and in 521 by
Cambyses of Persia.
Alexander the Great
recolonized it as a
