Chiropractic Health Hints

WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.

NERVES, JUST NERVES...

"Your trouble is nerves, just nerves, that's all," many have been told.
But your nerves are too important to your body to be dismissed so easily.
Nerves are the electrical system of the human body, and the spinal col-
umn is the "switchboard" controlling health.
In fact, every function taking place in your body is under the control of
the nerve system, often called "THE MASTER SYSTEM OF THE
HUMAN BODY."

DR. LEVINE

KEY TO NERVE HEALTH

The doctor of chiropractic works with the spine and nerves. He has
spent many years studying and learning the innermost secrets of the human nerve system.
His objective is to locate and correct the nerve trouble that may be causing the abnormal
functions and disorders in your body. By feeling the "blocked nerves" your chiropractor
releases nature's wonderful healing power.
The doctors at the Levine Clinic are specialists in nerve related problems. If you have
been told your pain is nerve related, then come to the nerve specialists.

Solutions To Prejudice
In School Discussed

LESLEY PEARL STAFF WRITER

B

everly Stone says
prejudice still exists
in the classrooms —
but she defies any-
one to find a place in soci-
ety where it does not
linger.
Ms. Stone, assistant
superintendent of instruc-
tion for Rochester schools,
spoke last week at a Food
for Thought luncheon
sponsored by Women's
Division of Jewish Fed-
eration. The topic of the
talk was "School Ties:
Prejudice in the Class-
room — Are Our Children
Part of the Problem or
Part of the Solution?"
Speaking with Ms.
Stone was Brian Kott, who
chairs the Jewish
Community Council's
Youth Committee and
serves on the Church-
State and Schools Com-
mittee.
"The kids today will
know a different world. A
multi-cultural under-
standing will be a prereq-
uisite for their success,"
said Ms. Stone, who began
teaching in 1962 in the
Oak Park and Bloomfield
Hills school systems. "So
we must open ourselves to
all individuals in our
schools."
Not everyone agrees
with that thinking.
"There is a small, yet
strong, group trying to
keep out others under the
guise of family values.
Those individuals are ded-
icated to controlling what
our children learn. We
must be sure voices of rea-
son are equally represent-
ed," Ms. Stone said.
Schools need to be pro-
active and fair and par-
ents need to be bold and
up-front, Ms. Stone said.
However, she added, don't
assume every action is
anti-Semitic.
Curriculum is key. In
the Rochester schools,
religious and secular holi-
days are discussed in
social studies classes —
all holidays, not just those
that fall in December.
Mr. Kott agreed with
that policy.
"The distinction must be
the appropriateness of
teaching about religion
rather than teaching reli-
gion," Mr. Kott said.

In dealing with anti-
Semitism in the class-
room, Mr. Kott said it is
important to recognize the
type of community
involved. He sees three
varieties: the community
where a small Jewish
influx is just beginning,
like Novi and Walled
Lake; the community with
a strong Jewish minority
that is settled, like West
Bloomfield and Birming-
ham; and the communities
where Jews act as the old
minority mixing with new
groups, as in Southfield
and Oak Park.
"In a school district like
Walled Lake, that was
fairly homogeneous until
five or six years ago, there

"We all have
a right to be
who we are."

Beverly Stone

may be practices in school
which no one has raised
an eye to — like Christ-
mas pageants," Mr. Kott
said. "What we take offen-
sively is not intentional.
In these instances, par-
ents and Jewish Com-
munity Council need to
discuss the new popula-
tion with the administra-
tion."
In areas such as West
Bloomfield, Mr. Kott sug-
gested parents work with
administrators to continue
battling the problems of
prejudice and misunder-
standing. And in the older
neighborhoods, Mr. Kott
said parents must teach
by example.
When problems arise,
Mr. Kott said parents
should be rational, non-
confrontational and
attempt to work with
administrators. JCCoun-
cil, American Jewish
Committee and the Anti-
Defamation League can
act as sources of support.
"Jewish identity is part
of our lives. That doesn't
negate integrating and
recognizing others' identi-
ty and right to celebrate
in it. We all have a right
to be who we are — that's
what we're fighting for,"
Ms. Stone said. ❑
