A
Yom Kippur speech
two years ago at the
Downtown Syna-
gogue sowed the
seeds for a new organiza-
tion dedicated to defend-
ing Israel and the Jewish
people.
La'Asote (To Do) was
born out of the frustration
of its president, local pub-
lic relations executive Berl
Falbaum. "Jews appease.
They try to avoid con-
frontation. They never
make anti-Semites pay
the price," Mr. Falbaum
said this week while
announcing the creation of
La-Asote.
He says the group will
be neither Kahane-style
confrontationists nor an
umbrella group like the
Jewish Community
Council which is limited
by consensus.
"We want to use the
same philosophy as the
black community in the
1950s — non-violent tac-
tics and political strate-
gies to deliver our ends,"
Mr. Falbaum said.
"This is not (attorney
and author) Alan Der-
showitz style chutzpah,"
he said. "Chutzpah is a
pejorative, a negative. But
if we don't stand up for
ourselves, no one else
will."
Mr. Falbaum pointed to
an incident in Macomb
County's Clinton Town-
ship last year as an exam-
ple. A township board
member publicly referred
to developer Graham
Orley as a "Jew-boy" dur-
ing discussion of a town-
ship project.
"The Jewish community
asked for the board mem-
ber to apologize," Mr.
Falbaum said. "We should
have asked for her resig-
nation."
He sees the group tak-
ing action on other issues,
such as appealing to
President Clinton for the
release of convicted spy
Jonathan Pollard and
going into local black
churches to discuss black
anti-Semitism.
Within the last six
months, the Michigan
Chronicle published an
opinion piece by Mr.
Falbaum that denounced
black anti-Semitism. "My
Bed Falbaum: Speaking out.
Jewish friends were
unhappy with me because
they thought raising the
issue would create trou-
ble. Some of my black
friends said my article
was absolutely right."
He said, "You can't
appease or compromise on
moral imperatives. You
don't 'dialogue' with big-
ots. That doesn't mean
that you can't meet with
people with whom you dis-
agree."
La'Asote will be limited
by its funding as to how
much it can do. The orga-
nization has created $18
individual and $36 family
memberships and has 50-
70 members "just by word -\
of mouth."
Its officers and board
include vice president
Asher Tilchin, secretary.
Geraldine Schwartz, trea-
surer Harold Grodman,
and board members Pnina
Basse, Julie Falbaum,
issues chairman Dr.
Jerome Kaufman, Larry
Rockind, Alvin Sallen,
Sheldon Sonkin and
fundraising-membership
chair Alicia Tisdale.
Mr. Falbaum is a former
vice president and eight-
year member of the
Jewish Community
Council. He said La'Asote
wants to work with the
Council, Anti-Defamation
League "and all the oth-
ers. We all have the same
goals in mind — getting
people involved who have
not been involved before.
"The existing organiza-
tions have the tradition
and history, and we want
to work with them," he
said.
