t wasn't long ago that Rabbi Yehuda Levin didn't even know

what the word "abortion" meant.

He was living in Brooklyn, studying at the Mirrer Yeshi-

va. His friends, neighbors, virtually everyone he knew was

Jewish. Abortion came up in conversation about as often as

the subject of Christmas traditions.

Then an acquaintance asked Rabbi Levin to attend a city

council meeting. The evening's topic was gay rights. Mem-
