Fried, and Johanna Borman,
said she is disappointed by
the community's mispercep-
tions about the Birmingham
Temple.
'We're a pretty normal con-
gregation," she says. "We cel-
ebrate the Jewish holidays;
we have a Seder and a
sukkah and lifecycle events
— bar and bat mitzvahs, con-
firmation.
"Our children are being
raised as Humanistic Jews
and have a strong Jewish
identity. We are educating
our children to feel Jewish
and carry that with them."

HOW SHOULD THE
JEWISH COMMUNITY
DEAL WITH
INTERMARRIED COUPLES?

"The approach now is not
right. Instead of encouraging
people to be Jewish, it's push-
ing them away.
"Twenty-one percent of our
members are intermarried,
and one of the- reasons they're

coming here is that, ideolog-
ically, we're not saying you
have to believe anything.
"Our idea is to welcome
them. Who are we to say
theirs is a wrong choice?
"What concerns me is that
this (those who join the tem-
ple) is such a small portion.
There are so many intermar-
ried couples who are just lost.
"Intermarriage is a reality.
We can't turn our backs on
these couples; we must en
courage them to participate
without insulting the non-
Jewish partner. And not wel-
coming them doesn't
encourage anyone not to in-
termarry.
"In a survey we did here,-
we asked, 'If you didn't belong
- to the Birmingham Temple,
,,where would you belong?
_Fifty-six percent said,
`Nowhere.'
"Half of all marriages to-
day in the Jewish communi-
ty are intermarriages.
Obviously, what people have
been doing is not working. It's
time to try something differ-
ent. Assimilated life is a re-
ality in America." ❑

Detroiters will rise to the
challenge for thousands of
their fellow Jews on Allied
Jewish Campaign Super Sun-
day Jan. 24.
Super Sunday, the commu-
nitywide telephone appeal,
will kick off the second of two
Super Weeks on behalf of the
Campaign, which benefits
our people here and abroad
through more than 60 bene-
ficiary agencies of the
Federation.
The new Challenge Fund
will make contributing to the
Campaign a double mitzvah:
for every dollar added to last
year's contribution, a mat-
ching dollar will go the Cam-
paign. New donors will see
every dollar matched with
two.
On Super Sunday hundreds
of volunteers will make calls.
Three shifts will be available:
9:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 11:45
a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.
Board members, agencies and
planning divisions will have
their own shift from 2 to 4:45
p.m.

Following Super Sunday,
Federation's Young Adult
Division will have its YAD
phonathon 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25;
organizations and congrega-
tions will participate Jan.
25-28.
