Jewish Education
Attracts Youth
.
Editor's note: This article is
one of a series that shows how
Jews here and overseas are
touched by the agencies of the
Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit and the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
More than anything else,
Gali Nuriel would like to
learn Hebrew. Although he
is the son of an Israeli father
and spent the first four years
of his life in Israel, Gali lost
most of his Hebrew fluency
when the family returned to
his mother's native America.
But the Agency for Jewish
Education is helping him get
it back. The 16-year-old
Berkley High School junior
is a senior at the AJE-spon-
sored Community Jewish
High School. There he is
studying conversational He-
brew among other subjects.
Gali will participate in the
Jewish community's semes-
ter-in-Israel program, Project
Discovery. While in Israel, he
hopes to be able to speak to
relatives and "intermingle
with Israelis."
Project Discovery is ad-
ministered by the Jewish
Federation's Israel Desk and
the AJE, in cooperation with
the Youth Aliyah department
of the Jewish Agency for Is-
rael. In Israel, Gali will fol-
low a regular American high
school curriculum with class-
es in Hebrew, history and ge-
ography of Israel and Jewish
studies. There also will be
time for tours, socializing,
arts, crafts, music and com-
munity service.
During his Israel experi-
ence, he hopes to make new
friends, Israeli and Ameri-
can. But he also wants to
"understand the land, people
and culture."
Gali says he believes con-
tinuing Jewish studies after
bar/bat mitzvah is important.
"Basically, we need to learn
more about ourselves. We
can take care of each other if
we know about our histories,
about how Jews live."
Although he is focused on
his Hebrew studies, his fa-
vorite class is the senior sem-
inar. His teacher, Jerry
Kaufman, makes it interest-
ing. "Mr. Kaufman is a real-
ly good teacher. He makes
me look at stuff, Judaism, in
different ways."
Gali says going to the
Community Jewish High
School is a worthwhile expe-
rience. "It's a good place to
learn about our Judaism."
Gall Nude!
The Community Jewish
High School is one of many
AJE programs. Others in-
clude Jewish Experiences
For Families, special educa-
tion for students with dis-
abilities, classes for new
Americans, Midrasha-Col-
lege of Jewish Studies, a
nursery school and family ed-
ucation programs.
AJE is one of many local
educational institutions that
benefit from the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign. Among them
are Akiva Hebrew Day
School, Hillel Day School,
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and
Yeshiva Gedola. In addition
to Jewish education, the
Campaign supports a variety
of services for people through
more than 60 agencies here
at home, overseas and in Is-
rael.
Gali's looking forward to
his semester in Israel. What
better place to learn about
being Jewish than in Israel?
Although he visited the Jew-
ish state five years ago, hav-
ing this opportunity is "really
great!"
