QUALITY IS OUR PRIORITY!
rounded him while he was
growing up had a huge impact
on him. The 47-year-old film- -\
maker — once wed to actress-
director Penny Marshall, now
remarried and father of a 1
1/2-year-old boy— created the
little-seen but well-received TV
series Free Country, about
Jewish immigrants at the turn
of the century.
All of Mr. Reiner's work con-
tains deft use of humor. "I
think the Jews have always
been the funniest people. —<
That's because they've always
had the most difficulty.
They've had it rougher than
any other group of people since
the beginning of time. They
discovered that humor was an
effective way to deal with pain
and suffering."
Mr. Reiner believes that
such suffering has made Jews
particularly empathetic. "If
you've been put upon for so
long, you have sympathy for
the downtrodden. Jewish peo-
ple have always been real good
about helping the underprivi-
leged, about standing up for
human rights."
Intelligence is another key
ingredient in Mr. Reiner's
work. "I think Jews are the
smartest people in the world.
For thousands of years, they
didn't have a homeland. They
got kicked out of places. They
had to live by their wits, so
they always stressed educa-
tion.
"Because we are the
smartest people in the world,
we are also the most hated.
People feel threatened. We're
the smallest group of people
and yet we're the lawyers, the
doctors, the bankers. We've
risen to high levels in society
and that's resented."
He points out that Jews
have a high profile in the film
industry. "It's all run by Jews,
even Disney. That's funny, be-
cause Walt Disney was a ter-
rible reactionary. If he found
out that Michael Eisner and
Jeffrey Katzenberg were run-
ning his company," he says
with a laugh, "he'd be spinning
in his grave. That's a wonder-
ful bit of poetic justice." ❑
