Country Dance Night by Congregation Beth Achim Men's Club, tomorrow night, 8:30 . . . $12.50 per person in- cludes country dance instruc- tions plus food and drinks. A RESTAURANT first and nitery second is the way General Manager Benny Ge- wargis describes the new Paradise of Southfield that opened Dec. 3. It's the former Dimitri's of Southfield location downstairs on Southfield Road, just north of 10 Mile .. . with a wide-open look that many folks will recall is what should have been done to the place before. Now it really looks like something . . . seating 275 or more with the center wall completely removed to show a large dance floor and or- chestra stage in the center .. . so very ideal for parties, too. Dancing and rhythmic bel- ly movement entertainment is Thursday through Sunday at Paradise of Southfield, open seven days . . . But as Benny says, it is secondary to the food with a full Mid- eastern and international (French, American, etc.) menu. The refreshing look has col- orful neon tubing all around in a most festive atmosphere as lights in planters blink softly. Hard to believe this is the same former Dimitri's of Southfield, converted into an excellent, airy look with mir- rored walls, booths where a former bandstand stood when Dimitri Syros tried, among other things, to make a nitery out of his previous Greek restaurant. Owners Sam Arabo qand Jerry Jamil plucked Benny as their general manager because of his vast experience in the restaurant field . . . He was manager at Southfield Manor and is knowledgeable enough to hold regular train- ing meetings with his waitstaff. Just looking around brings a shake of the head . . . In- genuity can do wonderful things . . . Paradise of Southfield is a prime example. REASON FOR Ramone's Cafe closing at Sunset Strip on Northwestern Highway was far from being a lack of customers. Owner Hassan "Ramone" Awarsaji had borrowed money to do some work at the restaurant . . . The lender wanted his money and sued . . . Ramone decided to close. Biggest losers are Ramone's customers . . . But he has too much talent not to emerge again . . . In the meantime, Ramone is doing catering .. . Folks who've wondered where he went can reach him at 354-6517. HE HAS A LOT of heavy romance going on but his wife since only Aug. 14 isn't jealous . . . even though it's with many. Tony Mar opened his new Jade Palace on Dec. 9, on 10 Mile and Coolidge in the Parkwood Plaza, Oak Park, and struck up a communal love affair with folks who en- joy coming back. They like the fact that no MSG is ever used at the 80-seater Jade Palace and the portions are above average to go with a low pricing concen- tration of his Cantonese, Szechuan and Mandarin food. This is a simple but clean little place that many are fin- ding well worth the visit .. . Tony is modest about his ex- perience, however, talent is something that can't be hid- den . . . He helped a friend open the Golden Dragon in Grosse Pointe Farms and ran the kitchen before opening his own place in Oak Park with newlywed wife Alice, who works by his side as do other close members of the family. Tony doesn't look that old, but over 20 years ago, he was bartender and maitre d' at the popular former Ming Palace in Northland . . . Now 40 years old, Tony and wife Alice are the owners of a Chinese restaurant that brings to mind the good little ones of yesteryears. "AN EVENING in Africa" Jan. 27, and "An Evening in Israel" Feb. 10, are the next two International Cafes being held at Southfield Civic Center, Evergreen and 10 1/2 Mile . . . with ethnic foods, music and dancing honoring the heritage of people from each sector around the world. 1/2 OFF ON YOUR DINNER I Save Up to ❑ I 25 on your Dinner Bill Bring he any Chinese Restaitrant Coupon wirldn A 5 mile - radius, we will give you an EXTRA 5% OFF up to 2596. - *No Coupon Books or Discount cards *Not good with any ocher special or discounted offer & Sunday Buffet *One Coupon per Guest Check Chinese New Year Celebration Jan. 25, 1993.
