If the child has never been to a particular camp before, viewing camp brochures and videos can be helpful, says Bob Ditter. "If the child has a visual image of what camp looks like, it is less likely to be a surprise." Mr. Ditter also recom- mends having the child spend some overnights with friends and grand- P parents. Handled proper- ly, these short away- from-home experiences enable children to feel more self-reliant and grown-up. Zoe L. is the only girl in her family of four, liv- ing in a city neighbor- hood that is home mostly to adults and university students. Moving into a cabin with five strangers owning different person- alities and a variety of quirks, Zoe learned to accept and be accepted. Learning to share, "to enter the fray and resolve conflicts," is, according to Bob Ditter, another essential lesson of a good camp program. Especially in the past 10 years, he continues, "there is a real preoccu- pation with individual talents and individual children. That's fine except children are born with an inflated sense of themselves, and they have to deal with that. Camp helps modify" pumped-up egos. Camp inspires the spirit of cooperation and allows children to put the demands on them- selves and others into perspective. "They get a sense of what's impor- tant and what's not important," Mr. Ditter says. The feeling of being part of something greater than themselves teaches children to co- exist with others and to be flexible. It's a lesson that will hold them in good stead as adults, in both their personal life and in jobs. Children who learn this lesson at camp have WONDER YEARS page 65 "TANUGA MAGIC" Two-month session for youngsters currently enrolled in Grades 3-10.
