University, Dr. Snider
continued on for her
medical degree, the only
Orthodox Jew in her
medical school class,
and, as far as she knew,
the only woman who
never wore slacks to lec-
tures.
"People expect you to
be like another planet,"
she says, recalling that
she was often the only
Orthodox Jew her class-
mates had ever encoun-
tered. "(Students) would
comment, 'Janet, you're
so normal.'"
Her peers may have
marveled at how "nor-
mal" she was, but Dr.
Snider also put a great
deal of effort into main-
taining her religious
observance during her
medical studies. In addi-
tion to wearing skirts
and long sleeves every
day, she faced the same
difficulties as other
observant Jews — exams
that fell on holidays,
kashrut in the cafeteria,
making it home before
Shabbat in the winter
months.
As a newlywed during
her third year of medical
school, she also faced the
same difficulties as other
married women — little
time for home and hus-
band, concerns about
maternity leave and
child care for the family
she would soon have.
Following her residen-
cy at Children's Hospital
of Michigan, Dr. Snider
was professionally court-
ed by Dr. Ralph Cash, a
local pediatrician, who
helped the young doctor
establish a part-time
schedule to accomodate
her religious lifestyle.
In return, Dr. Snider
agreed to work on
Sundays, a day on which
the practice had previ-
ously been closed.
Patients appreciate the
extended hours, her col-
leagues are pleased, and
Dr. Snider gets Thurs-
days and Fridays off to
prepare for Shabbat and
/ to spend time with her
children.
The medical communi-
ty has been quite acco-
modating. Her greatest
difficulty comes from
other Jews, she says. "A
