in the academy.
"It's a sport you can par-
ticipate in just about for-
ever. You can't do that
with sports like football,
baseball, boxing or karate.
If you need to compete at
a lower level as you get
older, so what? That's no
big deal."
Dr. Goldstein, who
began fencing in his
native Philadelphia while
he was in high school, was
a volunteer coach for the
fencing club at Ferndale
High School from 1978-89.
Besides facing local
schools, Ferndale compet-
ed in other states.
The coaching stint
began when Dr. Gold-
stein's son, Avery, was at
Ferndale. During the
club's peak, there were
more than 20 members of
the varsity, junior varsity
and women's teams com-
peting in all three
weapons — foil, epee and
sabre.
The foil, with a blade
approximately 35 inches
in length and weighing
just over a pound, is the
modern version of the
court sword. The epee is
the descendant of the
dueling sword. It is simi-
lar in length to the foil but

heavier, weighing about
27 ounces.
The sabre is the modern
version of the slashing
and thrusting calvary
sword. It's length and
weight are similar to the
foil.
Each weapon has its
own style and set of rules.
