Only at the end of that period will Israel complete the withdrawal of its forces from territory taken in 1967 in return for a "full peace," meaning the exchange of ambassadors and a "normalization" of re- lations with Syria. Until then, the two coun- tries will engage in con- fidence-building measures, including a staged withdrawal of Israeli forces on the plateau, the possible demilitarization of an area on the Syrian side of the frontier, an accommodation on early-warning facilities, and perhaps the stationing of American troops on the Golan to "compensate" 11 Decorator Colors 13'6" Width - For Seamless Installations Sale Price $16.99 sq. ycl $37.99 Value Textured Saxony Stainmaster 25 Decorator Colors Sale Price $9.99 sq. ycl $19.95 Value Extra Heavy Velvet Plush 32 New Contemporary Colors Sale Price $20.99 sq. ycl $44.99 Value Israel for relinquishing its military advantage on this highly strategic strip of ter- ritory. New York (JTA) — Close to 2,000 Ukrainian Jews gathered recently for the first Shabbat service held in the main Kiev synagogue since it was taken over by the Communist authorities in 1925 and turned into a puppet theater. "Many of us remember be- ing told by our parents about how they used to come here," said Yefim Kivitsky, 66, as he stood in the foyer of the imposing building. "Who could have imagined this, even five or six years ago? If you so much as ap- proached a synagogue, you were put on a blacklist, or even lost yom job." Last month the Kiev au- thorities granted permission to the Lubavitcher commun- ity to use the building jointly with the puppet theater, a longstanding institution in both Russia and Ukraine. On Dec. 5, Berel Karasik, chief rabbi of Kiev, led the enthusiastic congregation in prayer from his position on a small stage, a set of theater lights suspended above him. Rabbi Karasik was born in Russia and immigrated with his family to Israel in 1948. He returned as an emissary for Lishkas Ezras Achim, a Lubavitch group, in 1989 and was appointed chief rabbi by the Ukrainian government in 1991. "This is a holiday for the Jewish community of Kiev. Finally, after over half a century, this great center of communal life will again be filled with prayer and Jew- ish learning," Rabbi Karasik said. Kiev has long been viewed as one of the main Jewish cultural centers in Eastern - Europe, though many Jews have left in recent years for Israel or the West. Official statistics show Jews remain the third- largest ethnic group in c.,4 Ukraine, after Ukrainians and Russians. But their numbers have dwindled to 500,000 from several mill- A ion. "This is of course not ideal," said Noah Dubinsky, chairman of Kiev's Jewish -\ community, referring to the fact that the congregation would have to share the syn- agogue with the puppet theater. "It's akin to being thrown out of your apartment and then getting it back while still having to share the liv- ing room. "But it's certainly better than praying in the street," he added. According to Mr. Dubin- sky, a "gentlemen's agreement" on the use of the building has been made between Kiev authorities and the Jewish community. '4 Aside from Sabbath ser- vices, the building will be ` 1\ used to house a new full-time college-level yeshiva for boys, as well as a part-time seminary for girls.
