lorence Stance was a
victim of a brutal
knifing a quarter of a
century ago. She was
left for dead in her Detroit
apartment. But the
Motown native didn't
want to leave the inner
city after recovering. She
thrived on independence
and enjoyed tossing par-
ties for neighborhood
friends.
When her doctor,
Jerome Frankel of Sinai
Hospital, suggested that
Mrs. Stance move to
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments in Oak Park, she
flatly refused.
"I liked it there," she
said, referring to her old
apartment on the corner
of Woodward and Bethune
near the Fisher Building.
"I really didn't want to
move here. I fought my
doctor."
But in 1989 the elevator
in her apartment broke,
and her landlord wouldn't
fix it. Poor health made
life in the city increasing-
ly difficult. Finally, Mrs.
Stance agreed to relocate
to Harriet and Ben Teitel
Federation Apartments,
assisted living quarters on
10 Mile Road.
She dreaded the move,
but now she's grateful she
made it.
The Jewish Federation
Apartments, partly funded
by the Allied Jewish
Campaign, aim to assist
the elderly in day-to-day
living without depriving
them of independence.
The apartments —
which include the Anna
and Meyer Prentis Towers
I and II, Lillian and
Samuel Hechtman Feder-
ation Apartments, Teitel
Federation Apartments,
where Mrs. Stance lives —
ubsidized by the
subsidized
Department of Housing
and Urban Development.
But leaders of the Jewish
Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit say dona-
tions are especially neces-
sary during these hard
economic times.
Since 1967, the Jewish
Federation Apartments
Inc. has grown from one
168-unit building to four,
which serve more than
650 elderly, Jewish and
non-Jewish.
Run by a board of direc-

tors, executive director,
and staff, the apartments
strive to provide residents
with "more than just a
nice place to live." Parties
and social outings
enhance a feeling of com-
munity. Each apartment
is equipped with an emer-
gency cord, in case a resi-
dent requires immediate,
help.
Soon after Mrs. Stance
began living in her new
home, she suffered two
strokes as well as compli-
cations from diabetes. Her
leg was amputated in
1990. Mrs. Stance said
members of the staff and
volunteers at Federation
Apartments helped her
through her hardship.
While she was in the hos-
pital, members of Teitel's
Sunshine Committee tried
to cheer her up.
"They sent me get-well
cards," she said.
Today, Mrs. Stance
cheers others in the hospi-
tal by participating on the
same committee. She also
attends art classes and
card parties with neigh-
bors at Teitel. With the
help of the staff at Jewish
Federation Apartments,
Mrs. Stance has hired a
nurse to help her take -_
care of daily chores.
"I'm content. I'm happy.
I've made friends," she
said.
Mrs. Stance and Rose
Schutzman live in differ-
ent apartment buildings,_)
but value the same type of
lifestyle: an independent
one. Mrs. Schutzman, who
