No Anti-Semitism
xists In Slovakia'
rague (JTA) — The only
abbi in newly independent
lovakia says "there is no
ti-Semitism" in the coun-
ry, according to a Slovak
.441y.
Rabbi Lazar Kleinman
ays anti-Jewish sentiment
s a thing of the past in
loftTakia, whose separation
om the Czech Republic on
an. 1 has given rise to con-
n over the future of the
,000- member Jewish com-
unity there.
His comments fly in the
of many reports of anti-
emitic incidents and sen-
iment in Slovakia that
rose with its nascent na-
ionalism in early 1990 and
I as been felt since.
An interview with the
r,ananian-born rabbi was
If ublished in the Bratislava
ewspaper Pravda, three
ays before the official
i-eakup of the 75-year old
zechoslovak federation.
Rabbi Kleinman, 53, was
installed four months ago as
rabbi in Kosice, in eastern
ovakia. He is an
Australian citizen who
udied in Israel and came to
is present post from a rab-
nic position in Helsinki,
Finland.
The front-page display
iven the interview with
m appeared to reflect
lovak concern that Western
aid for its struggling econo-
y might be threatened by
perceived anti-Semitic and
nationalist coloration of po-
litical developments there.
A spokesman for the Jew-
sh community said a day
after the interview appeared
at Slovak Jews expect
leaders of the newly in-
dependent country to em-
phatically dissociate them-
lves from any act reminis-
cent of the Slovak Nazi
puppet state of World War
The Dec. 30 statement by
Jaroslav Franek, spokesman
of the Union of Jewish
Communities in Slovakia,
came on the eve of formal
independence for the repub-
lic, which is headed by
rime Minister Vladimir
Meciar.
World Jewish Congress
- aders several months ago
called for investigation into
the wartime past of a mem-
ber of the Slovak Cabinet,
usan Slovodnik, the min-
ister of culture, who re-
portedly served in the
Slovak equivalent of the
Hitler Youth.
Rabbi Kleinman said the
rapprochement between
Israel and the Vatican had
diminished anti-Semitism in
such Catholic countries as
Poland, Hungary and the
two components of former
Czechoslovakia.
Rabbi Kleinman was ask-
ed about "political forces
trying to convince the world
there is an acute danger of
anti-Semitism in Slovakia."
He replied that his four
months in Slovakia had per-
suaded him there is less an-
ti-Semitism in that country
than in many democratic
lands of the West. He told
Pravda a distinction has to
be drawn between anti-
Semitism and hooliganism.
Rabbi Kleinman said anti-
Semitism had existed in
Slovakia during World War
II, and Communist rulers
later oppressed all religions,
although the Jews most se-
verely.
