In fact, the facilitator's role is minor, Mr. McCaffrey says. He is there to offer counter- pressure only. It works like this: Mr. Golden places his wrist in the hand of the facilitator. From then on, the facilitator's role is only to help Mr. Golden raise his hand over the key- board, allowing Mr. Golden to place his finger on the next desired letter. Not everyone can serve as a facilitator. Some seem to have a better rapport. So far, Mr. Golden has been able to work with five of the 11 JARC employees. But what of Mr. Golden's ability to spell? Even JARC workers admit they are mys- tified. Syracuse Professor Dou- glas Biklin suggests this is the case because individuals, even if not taught directly to spell, have learned to do so by being constantly exposed to the written word. Based on recommenda- tions of JARC workers, facil- itated communication is about to become part of Mr. Golden's formal educational program. A speech patholo- gist will develop the course. Facilitated communication may sound easy enough; but, in fact, it requires great pa- tience and concentration. It can take some time for Mr. Golden to spell out his name or answer a simple question like, "What would you like for your snack? Jel- lo or pretzels?" For now, such responses comprise the bulk of Mr. Golden's communication. The "Prime Time" segment showed a dazzling display: a disabled young man who wrote poetry expressing his mournful isolation at being able to imagine, but not share, his thoughts. JARC workers stress that the "Prime Time" report is not the norm and that eloquent poetry is not the goal. "I'm just amazed at how far we've come," Mr. McCaffrey says. "And I can't limit how far we might go. But even if we go no further, I'm happy because Howie is being al- lowed to make choices about his own life. "What if we kept putting mashed potatoes on your plate and you didn't like mashed potatoes? Isn't it nice---; to know that if Howie prefers sweet potatoes to mashed potatoes, he can let us know? Frankly, I'm ecstatic to know. "The choices are really the < key for me," he adds. "It helps put Howie in control of his own life. Now he can decide what he wants to eat and to wear — all those little things we just take for granted." ❑ Parenting Center Plans Classes The Applebaum Jewish Parenting Center will hold a class for grandparents and grandchildren in kinder- garten, grade 1 and grade 2 3:30-5 p.m. Jan. 24, 31 and Feb. 7. This class is taught by Susan Barr, storyteller and librarian at the Applebaum I Jewish Parenting Center, 4200 Walnut Lake Road. There is a fee. The Parenting Center will offer parents of young -\ children the opportunity to ,./ learn practical and effective -` methods of communication that can be put to immediate use to make life with children.- easier and more rewarding.
