Enter anti-lock brakes.
These computer-controlled
tsystems eliminate wheel
lock-up by monitoring wheel
speeds during braking and
lowering the pressure to in-
dividual brakes that are
slowing down faster than the
other three.

One of the big concerns peo-
ple had about cars getting
smaller and lighter was that
when they were in accidents
they'd be crushed like beer
cans, along with their occu-
pants.
In some models of small
cars, those predictions came
close to being true. However,
new interest in safety on the
part of car buyers has kin-
dled the same interest in leg-
islators and manufacturers.
So there are a number of new
features available that are
slowly beginning to have a
good effect on some bad sta-
tistics.
Every car has three-point
restraints in the front. But
you might also look for the
same feature in the back
seat. Also, seat belt protec-
tion is limited if they don't fit
you right. Some car models
have adjustable restraints
that can be raised or lowered
to fit shorter or taller pas-
sengers.
Funny how controversial
air bags were just a few years
ago, and now they're a mar-
keting shibboleth; you virtu-
ally can't sell a car that
doesn't have at least one.
Even so, don't believe that
You're safe just because
you're behind an air bag.
They're useless in side, rear,
oblique and roll-over impacts.
You still have to wear your
lap and shoulder belts for
safety. Air bags are still op-
tional on many models, but
'All be pretty much univer-
al by 1995.
When you're in danger of
€ollision, your first reaction
is to clamp your foot onto the
brake pedal as hard as you
can push. The result: The
brakes lock the wheels, the
tires lose their grip on the
1-oad and the car keeps right
going.
Since disc brakes usually
are more efficient than drum
brakes, the front wheels are
more likely to lock up, and
this is where inconvenience
turns into disaster.
If the rear wheels lock, you
lose a little stability. But if
the front wheels lock, you
can't steer at all. If you're on
a slick surface, brake action
.otally without panic may
',field exactly the same re-
