small knapsack filled with
a few favorite toys, books
and games — familiar
items are comforting.
Parents can get involved
with games and activities,
as well. The parent who
isn't doing the driving can
read aloud. Other popular
games include "20
Questions" and tallying
license plates. One family
even counted cars from
Lake Tahoe to San
Francisco. They gave up
after 3,000.
As the parent, you can
have a few small toys and
games to dole out during
the trip as a surprise to
fractious tykes.
It's also smart to bring a
small cooler filled with
light snacks and drinks
(Mom and Dad can bring a
thermos filled with coffee).
Plan your traveling time
so that you arrive at
overnight stops in the
midafternoon. That way,
everyone can relax and
enjoy anything from a dip
in the swimming pool at
the hotel to a stroll
through a park or muse-
urn.
In addition to fun and
games on the road, safety
is a factor. Make sure
young travelers are buck-
led in at all times.
Children who weigh less
than 40 pounds should
always ride in a child
safety seat; use a booster
seat instead of pillows to
adjust the height. And
never put luggage on the
back window shelf of the
car — if you stop short, it
becomes a deadly projec-
tile.
RENTERS' TIPS
Often you don't take
your own car on the road
but rent one. While it's
convenient, many renters
find the process confusing.
Whenever possible,
reserve your rental car in
advance, determining
when and where it is to be
picked up. Find out if
there is an extra charge
for picking the car up in
one place and dropping it
off in another.
Shop around to get the
best rate. Some companies
have a low daily fee but
charge a hefty sum per
mile; others might charge
more per day but offer
unlimited mileage. Ask
about fly/drive packages
offered by some airlines.
Some hotels and resorts
also offer packages that
include a rental car.
Consider what size car
you'll need. Two people
traveling for the day can
get away with a tiny vehi-
cle; a family of four toting
a lot of luggage will need
something larger. Larger
groups will want to con-
sider the convenience of a
minivan.
And there is always the
fun of renting a vintage
car, such as a Thunder-
bird convertible (a la
Louise), or something
sporty, like a Mazda
Miata. For some renters,
the added price is worth
the fun factor.
Most car rental firms
will try to sell their insur-
ance coverage. You may
not need it. Often the
insurer that. covers your
personal vehicle also cov-
ers rented cars, or the
credit card you use to pay
for the rental covers the
car, as well. However,
check with your insurer or
credit-card company

automotive terms. They
can be very different,
especially in Germany.
A transmission is called
a transmission in France,
transmissione in Italy and
a transmision in Spain. In
Germany, it's a getriebe.
