Prepare Your Car
Before You Go

Thelma & Louise was a
celebration of cars as
much as of female libera-
tion. And Louise's green
Thunderbird was as much
a star as Susan Sarandon
or Geena Davis.
Thelma and Louise were
a modern-day Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid as they robbed small-
town liquor stores and ran
(drove, actually) from the
long arm of the law,
careening all the while
through America's most
scenic back roads. With
the top down, of course.
Who hasn't dreamed of
hopping in the car and
driving away from it all?
The scenery in Thelma &
Louise was gorgeous, but
most of us would prefer a
slightly tamer adventure.
Nonetheless, the movie
provides a timely lesson in
car travel: Louise's
Thunderbird was a well-
cared-for classic that was
in perfect running condi-
tion. No breaking down on
America's deserted high-
ways for them, although
they did learn that pick-
ing up hitchhikers is a no-
no for road travelers — no
matter how cute they may
be.
It's not surprising that
car travel is the most pop-
ular option when it comes
to vacations, and it gets
more popular every year
as people look for afford-
able ways to get away
from the rat race.
But while you plan your
next road trip, remember
that the journey will only
be as good as your car's
condition.

CHECK UNDER
THE HOOD
The first thing to do is
to give your car a thor-
ough physical. Here is a

checklist suggested by the
Car Care Council:
• Make sure coolant is
clean and at the proper
level and that the pres-
sure cap, thermostats and
hoses are in good condi-
tion. Connections should
be tight.
• Check and adjust
drive belts.
• Make sure service on
the engine is up to date,
such as getting a tuneup,
changing the oil and filter
and having the electrical,
ignition, fuel and emission
control systems checked.
• Check all fluids. Top
off or change as necessary.
• Check the suspension
and steering.
• Inspect the tires; have
them rotated and bal-
anced as necessary. Check

the wheel alignment. Also
inspect the spare tire to
make sure it's in good con-
dition.
• Inspect brake lining
and pads; replace worn
parts.
• Check for holes in the
muffler and pipes.
• Make sure the wind-
shield wipers are in good
working
condition.
Replace wipers if neces-
sary and top off washer
fluid.
• Make sure all lights,
turn signals and flashers
work.
• Clean the car and
apply a protective coat of
wax.

trailer or haul any loads,
