Car Mechanic's
Basic Tools

If you're going to be a do-it-
yourselfer, you're going to
need the right tools. The ba-
sic tools a mechanic uses fall
into just a few categories.
• Hand wrenches. Your
choice: open-end, box-end or
combination (open on one
end, box on the other). Since
either end type has its uses,
most mechanics go for com-
bination wrenches. Hand
wrenches are great for quick
adjustments or tight fits, but
they take forever if you have
to move a long bolt. That's
why you need a set of
• Socket wrenches. The
handles come in a bewilder-
ing variety of styles. But one
basic driver and a set of
sockets will get you start-
ed. Before you buy anything,
decide on a drive size. There
are three: 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch
and 1/2 inch. For most uses,
3/8 inch is best. But it's too
small for heavy-duty work,
and too big for tiny, delicate
nuts and bolts.
Sockets come in two basic
types: deep and shallow.
Shallow sockets are smaller
and easier to maneuver, but
you need deep sockets for get-
ting nuts off long bolts. You
have to know whether you
need English or metric sizes.
• Drivers. You need
straight-and Phillips-blade
screwdrivers, as well as Torx
drivers, which have become
quiet popular in the last 10
or 15 years.,
A couple of good sets of pli-
ers and a hammer or two
round out a basic tool set.
There is a practically infinite
number of special tools for
particular jobs; most of them
you can do without most of
the time.
