MI 48009 Phoper (313) 644-1124 Since 1971 Project Otzma Meetings Set Informational meetings about Project Otzma, a volunteer service program in Israel for young adults, will take place later this month. Men and women in their early 20s who are inter- ested in working and studying in Israel can learn about Otzma at the Michigan State University Hillel on Jan. 20 and at the University of Michigan Hillel Jan. 21. Both meetings will be at 7 p.m. In addition, a Detroit-area meeting will be scheduled for later in January. Now in its eighth year, Project Otzma (Hebrew for strength) is designed to strengthen the bonds between North American communities and Israel through volunteer service. It is coordinated by the Council of Jewish Feder- ations and administered locally through the Israel Desk of the Jewish Federation of Metro- politan Detroit. The pro- gram's curriculum is con- tinually changing to meet the current needs of Israeli society. In the beginning, partic- ipants spend 3 1/2 months on a centrally-located kib- butz with an ulpan course to acquire the fundamen- tals of the Hebrew lan- guage combined with inte- gration into all aspects of kibbutz life. Afterward, they spend seven weeks tutoring and working with students at a Youth Aliyah village, which acts as a home to immigrant teens and a boarding school for Israelis. For another seven weeks, they will work in absorption (resettlement) centers with Ethiopian and Rus- sian families. Three options are avail- able for the two-month pioneering track: working with new immigrants from the former USSR and Ethiopia; volunteering on young kibbutzim in the Arava Desert or the Galilee; or working in new industrial sites in develop- ing areas of the country. The program will con- clude with a three-month residency working on com- munity projects in Detroit's Project Renewal neighborhood of Neot Shazar in Yavne. They live in the project area and work in service pro- grams, such as assisting in or after school, in an absorption center, at a community center, or at a home for the elderly. Israeli educators, politi- cians, scientists, authors and artists meet with the group throughout the year at seminars, conferences and on tiyulim (excur- sions) focusing on Israel's land, history and people. Project Otzma is spon- sored by the Israel Forum and the Council of Jewish Federations. It is under the local auspices of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and funded in part by the United Jewish Found- ation. Cosponsoring orga- nizations include the World Zionist Organi- zation and the Jewish Agency for Israel.
