Campaign Helps
Senior Adult Events
Editor's Note: The lives of
Jews here and overseas
are touched by the agen-
cies of the Jewish Feder-
ation of Metropolitan
Detroit, supported by con-
tributions to the Allied
Jewish Campaign,
Larry Aronsson knows
first-hand the community
services for senior adults
available through the
Jewish Community Cen-
ter, where he spends much
of his time each week par-
ticipating in programs or
as a volunteer.
"I don't know what I'd
be doing if I didn't have
the Jewish Center," said
the 71-year-old retired
accountant.
"Mr. Aronsson's quality
of life has been greatly
enhanced by his Jewish
Center participation,"
according to Leslie Bash,
building director of the
Jimmy Prentis Morris
JCC. "He also supports
the Center through his
leadership roles because
he's so anxious to help
guide the future of the
agency."
Every Tuesday, Mr.
Aronsson is a volunteer at
the Jewish Information
Service, which provides
callers with addresses,
facts about Jewish life and
a directory of social wel-
fare agencies.
In addition, he is a
group leader with the
Institute for Retired
Professionals (IRP), a
member-driven program
that involves 275 seniors
in more than two dozen
study groups that focus on
subjects from photography
to philosophy and from art
to literature. He sits on
the board of the IRP,
which also plans social,
educational and cultural
events, including trips
and retreats.
He plays contract bridge
at least once a week in the
contract bridge game at
the Maple-Drake JCC. Mr.
Aronsson brings his own
deck of jumbo face cards.
"I've won my fair share of
prizes, but I don't usually
place first, second or
third," he said with a
smile.
While he is physically
vigorous, Mr. Aronsson
feels some effects of aging.
"I have vision and hearing
problems, but you learn to
live with them and adapt,"
he said.
"He attends the Center's
support group for the
visually impaired, which
is assisted by Sinai
Hospital and which offers
a special program of activ-
ities and support for par-
ticipants," according to
Ms. Bash.
In addition to using
many programs at the
Center, Mr. Aronsson also
holds several leadership
roles.
He is president of the
Senior Adult Council at
the JCC, a forum for
Center issues relating to
older adults; serves on the
board of the JCC and its
Senior Adult and JPM
committees; and is a dele-
gate to the Jewish Com-
munity Council.
To participate in so
many activities, Mr.
Aronsson, who cannot
drive, depends on his wife,

door-to-door transporta-
tion services arranged
through the Jewish Voca-
tional Service, the SMART
system and the Jewish
Information Service.
Begun five years ago,
the JIS door-to-door pro-
gram for older adults
operates on Mondays and
Wednesdays. Rides also
may be arranged if four or
five riders wish to attend
a Jewish Center program
on a different day.
The buses, provided by
the UHS Transportation
Department, make about
60 pickups each week in
parts of Detroit and the
suburbs, arriving at the
JCC by 10 a.m. and
departing around 2:30
p.m. There is a suggested
donation of $1 per round-
trip ride. To arrange a
ride, contact the Jewish
Information Service at
967-HELP (967-4357) or
(TT) 967-0460.
The Jewish Community
Center has extensive pro-
grams for older adults at
both the Maple-Drake and
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
branches.
