first major national orga-
nization to call for the
impeachment of President
Richard Nixon following
the Watergate break-in at
the Democratic National
Committee offices. The
Union listed several
grounds for impeachment,
citing violations of the
right of political dissent,
appropriation of
Congressional war-making
powers; establishment of a
personal secret police that
committed crimes; and
attempted interference in
the trial of government
researcher Dr. Daniel
Ellsberg, who released tol
the media the top-secret
"Pentagon Papers" tracing
the history of American
involvement in Vietnam.
Dr. Ellsberg was not
convicted. Richard Nixon
resigned from office.
1973: ABORTION

'

DECRIMINALIZATION
In Roe vs. Wade and Doe
vs. Bolton, the U.S.
Supreme Court held that
the constitutional right to
privacy includes a preg- :
nant woman's decision;
whether to bear a child or
have an abortion.
The rulings struck down
state laws that made abor-
tion a criminal act. The\
ACLU handled the Doe
case. (Michigan ACLU
since has represented
alleged civil liberties vio-
lations for pro-choice and
pro-life groups.)

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Sixteen
paratroopers were lightly in-
jured in a practice jump in
the Negev this week.
The accident was blamed
on bad weather, according to
the Israel Defense Force
spokesman.
Eleven of the injured sus-
tained minor fractures,
sprains or bruises and were
released after first-aid:
treatment at a local clinic<
The other five were trans-,,
ferred to hospitals in the re
gion and kept for further ob:..\
servation and treatment.
Military sources pointed
out that the practice jump
was deliberately carried out
under severe conditions as
part of IDF policy to train
soldiers to perform under
any conditions.
Some men are always
lightly injured in any such
exercise, but this time the
number was higher than
usual.
