has raised more than
$650,000. An Oct. 4 New
York Times advertisement
announcing the drive brought
in $250,000.
Detroiters already have
contributed some $3,000.
"Whenever people are suf-
fering or dying of hunger and
deprivation, it's important for
the Jewish community to be
sensitive, concerned and sup-
portive," said Federation
Executive Vice President
Robert Aronson.
In addition to private con-
tributions, the JDC is relying
on a possible grant from the
State Department to help fi-
nance the tent city. In hopes
of securing 30 percent of the
project's cost, JDC represen-
tatives met with government
officials this week.
Joyce Miller, coordinator of
the New York Jewish Coa-
lition for Somali Refugee
Relief, said problems in So-
malia have tapered off since
U.S. troops entered the coun-
try last month. The Coalition
includes the Council of Jew-
ish Federations, the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee,
Hadassah and others. It is
serving as the fund-raising
arm for the JDC, which will
donate more than 99 percent
of the funds to Nathan's tent
city project, Ms. Miller said.
The tent city is one way
Jews can help, Ms. Miller
said. Each tent will be paint-
ed with the words, "From
Jerusalem with love."
The JDC will channel all
funds collected into other re-
lief efforts should the tent city
project not materialize.
Even though the Somali
leaders shunned Israel's re-

cent attempt to provide as-
sistance to the region, Rabbi I
Irwin Groner of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek said a joint-
resolution supporting relief
for victims of the ravages in
Somalia and the former
Yugoslavia was read during
a Sabbath service last month.
"I think the issue of human —<
need transcends political ad-
vantage," he said.
Meanwhile, teen-age mem-
bers of the Young People's
Society of Temple Beth El are `-\
considering holding a drive.
to help Somali famine vic-
tims. Youth group adviser
Lainie Goodman said that if =\/
members vote in favor of the I
proposal, Somali relief orga-
nizations will receive pro-
ceeds from the upcoming
Winter Conclave, a Michigan
State Temple Youth activity -(
Beth El will sponsor later this
month.
Another relief effort comes
from the Detroit Chapter of
the American Jewish Com=
mittee, which has sponsored
letter-writing and phone
campaigns to convince legis-
lators and United Nations of- <,
ficiaLs to support all-out relief )
efforts.
Other temples and synr:- _-
gogues have contributed to __\)
Mazon, an organization that
typically comes to the aid of I
the hungry living in America. / I
Executive Director Iry Cra-'
mer, however, feels the situ-
ation in Somalia warrants
immediate attention. Toward c-)
that end, the organization
has contributed $59,000 to
the International Medical
ps, a group providing
starving children with liquid,
high-protein diets. ❑

HEALTHY FEET HINTS:

Some people have feet that are
very sensitive to pressures of any
kind. If this sounds like you then
you may have hypersensitive feet.
The best type of shoe for the hyper-
sensitive foot is one that is soft and
roomy.

May Live: Talking to Our
Kids About AIDS," will in-

transmission and prevention
of AIDS and about Jewish
values in decision making.
Following several months
of study by an ad hoc com-
mittee, the curriculum was
formed. Mr. Wise had sug-
gested the Torah Aura lesson

for all students from grades
6 through 12. The committee,
including Mr. Wise, decided
the lesson itself was not
enough and that backgrouniii-
information about AIDS
needed to be provided also.
