LESLEY PEARL STAFF WRITER
lmost one year ago
the Jewish Educa-
tion Planning Com-
mittee of the Jewish
Federation issued a report
suggesting local children
were not getting a fair
- 'hake in Jewish schooling.
N Since that time, it seems
everyone is asking the
L. question, "How do we
make
our
children
Jewish?"
In an effort to address
he problem, the Jewish
Federation's Education
/= Planning Division is
bringing together educa-
tors, parents, students,
lay leaders and volunteers
7 p.m. Jan. 10.
An open meeting, to be
held in the auditorium of
- the United Hebrew
Schools Building, will
address educational needs
• within the community.
- Individuals wishing to
make a presentation will
be limited to five minutes
and are encouraged to
\ make a reservation.
- Irwin Alterman, chair-
man of the Jewish Edu-
cation Planning Division,
\_ said the forum was sug-
gested as a way of getting
\---,aried input on a high-pri-
/—ority topic.
"When the report was
published a year ago, it
generated a fair number of
letters to the editor in The
> -Jewish News and discus-
\ sions in the community.
•
"Our division felt it
would be appropriate, as
part of our process, to
hear from anyone in the
community that has ideas
/—about how Federation
should use its resources
and influence with regard
to education," he said.
In the past, similar public
forums have produced
ideas Federation has
adopted.
"I suspect some of the
ideas people will share
may be unworkable. There
/- is a relative cap to total
amounts of dollars for
education available. Also,
some people may not fully
understand Federation's
-Telatively limited role in
\ direct delivery of educa-
• tional services. With that
said, I really hope we get
some interesting ideas to
• think about."
