As American Jews, we support our country's courageous humanitarian effort inside Somalia. But we also know that the crisis is far from over. In the past 18 months, millions of lives have been disrupted, destroyed and devastated. One out of every two Somalis is now a refugee. As a community, we cannot remain silent in the face of continued Somali suffering. Our own history cries out to us to do all we can to save these peo- ple. To help them regroup and recoup. To build a silver lining into this journey to hell. Thus, American Jewish organizations have joined with Israel's renowned humanitarian, Abie Nathan, to build a tent city for Somali refugees. Plans call for a truly humane 2000-tent oper- ation for 20,000 refugees. With its food distribution, cooking facilities, medical center, electricity and sanita- tion, this whole center can be built in six weeks by American and Israeli vol- unteers. The project has the support of the United Nations. Our current camp site is in Kenya on the Somali border. But if the need for a tent city there should diminish over the next few weeks, we will work with international agencies and relocate to a more urgent spot. In any case, all funds will go only toward Somali assistance. During the High Holy Days, we issued an urgent appeal for help. Thanks to an outpouring of generosity from the American Jewish and Israeli commu- nities, we've raised most of the funds needed. But we still need to raise $200,000 more before construction can begin. If you have already contributed, you have our heartfelt thanks — and our hope that you'll pass this ad along to a caring friend. If you have not yet contributed, please do so now. We call upon our people to reach into our collective memory and reach out to a people in torment. To pit our strength against their suffering. Our love against their lives. To literally make the difference between life and death.
