CARL STERR Senators Lobby E.C. On U.N. Measures Washington (JTA) — A bipartisan group of U.S. nators has sent letters to European Community leaders urging them to end the "Israel-bashing" in the 'Inited Nations. Thirteen senators, - spearheaded by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, last week called on the E.C. leaders to avert what has become the routine annual passage f 30 anti-Israel resolutions. The measures are scheduled to come up this month in the U.N. General Assembly. The "anti-Israel resolu- tions are passed each year in the United Nations, with the specific objective of condem- ning and embarrassing the government of Israel," and "we believe the resolutions re unjustified," the sena- tors wrote. The letters were sent to British Foreign Minister ouglas Hurd, who current- ly chairs the E.C. Council of Ministers, and Danish For- eign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen. The lawmakers argued the resolutions would fly in the face of the "tangible steps" aken by Israeli Prime Min- ister Yitzhak Rabin to ac- celerate the Middle East eace process and, "at this elicate stage," would "only harm the talks." "In our opinion, Israel hould be commended for its commitment to the peace talks, rather than openly condemned in resolutions at he General Assembly," they wrote. The senators also called for Israel to be included in a re- gional working group, which is a prerequisite for full par- ticipation in the multilateral rganization. Israel has been excluded from its rightful place in the Asian regional group by embers of the League of Arab States and, therefore, is unable to hold key com- ittee chairmanships or serve as a rotating member of the U.N. Security Council. As a result, the Jewish state has applied for tem- porary membership in the "Western European and hers" regional group. The senators' effort was lauded this week by the American Jewish Com- mittee, which in recent mon- ths has petitioned ambas- sadors and foreign ministers of key member countries for what it called "Israel's rightful place in the com- munity of nations." "Israel-bashing is an in- tolerable vestige of the Cold War, and the continued pet- ty denials of Israel's nationhood in the U.N. degrade that institution and hinder its effectiveness," said Jason Isaacson, AJCommittee director of government and interna- tional affairs. Last year, the General Assembly revoked Resolu- tion 3379, which had denigrated Zionism as racism. But other resolutions scheduled to come before the General Assembly this mon- th include condemnations of Israel's alleged abuses of Pa- lestinian human rights, il- legal "imposition" on Jerusalem and cooperation with South Africa, specifically in "military and nuclear fields." Stuart Feldman, foreign affairs aide to Mr. Hatch, said the letters were a logical extension of the sena- tor's efforts "to ensure Israel was treated properly and fairly in the international community." Mr. Hatch has lobbied countries such as Indonesia and Bangladesh to recognize Israel, he said. Israel Helps Build A Tank Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel may assist India in building a new tank. According to a report in the Times of India, Israel is seeking to provide sensors and fire-control systems for a tank being developed by In- dia. A senior Indian defense of- ficial said the Israelis "are prepared to delete brand names of the items they supply" for the Arjun tank, Cooperation on the project would be significant since New Delhi for decades dem- onstrated solidarity with the Palestinians and kept its distance from Jerusalem. It established full diplomatic relations with Israel only last January. Israeli defense officials said cooperation between Israel and India on the pro- ject would require a political decision, news reports said.
