Former Employee
Sues Jewish News

RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER

T

he Detroit Jewish
News will not con-
cede to claims of a
former employee who says
members of the newspa-
per's staff are anti-
Semitic.
"The allegations that
have been made against
The Jewish News are
totally without merit,"
said Arthur Horwitz, asso-
ciate publisher. "The
Jewish News is a place
that has a progressive
work environment and all
employees are encouraged
to both explore and ex-
pand upon their religious
and cultural interests."
The attorney for former
part-time typesetter Joy
Gardin filed a lawsuit
Monday and invited the
media to hear her allega-
tions of religious and sex-
ual discrimination at The
Jewish News. Ms. Gardin
claims her supervisor,
Curtis DeLoye, directed
anti-Semitic comments to
her and other. Jewish
employees.
Steven Cohen, Ms.
Gardin's attorney, main-
tains that Ms. Gardin and
two other employees filed
a formal written com-
plaint with senior man-
agement at The Jewish
News. In a press release,
Mr. Cohen said the news-
paper's management re-
sponded only after a long
delay and concluded that
the complaints were the
result of a "personality
conflict" between the
women and Mr. DeLoye.
Ms. Gardin also claims
that her work schedule
was changed and abridg-
ed. She says her job was
eliminated and replaced
by a full-time position.
She turned down the
opportunity to fill that
position first, according to
Mr. Horwitz.
"The Jewish News re-
flects the diversity of the
overall Jewish communi-
ty," Mr. Horwitz respond-
ed. "We have persons from
all religious persuasions
and we are sensitive to
their particular require-
ments and consistently go
out of our way to accom-
modate them."
"The issue of anti-
Semitism at The Jewish
News was one that was

brought up by the plaintiff
in an attempt to secure a
financial settlement. She
assumed that holding
a press conference to
attempt to embarrass The
Jewish News and its staff
would result in her receiv-
ing whatever she wanted,"
Mr. Horwitz said.
Ms. Gardin's suit seeksz_
reinstatement of her job,
damages of more than
$10,000 and a jury trial.
She contends that inten-
tional, on-the-job inflic-
tion of emotional distress
caused her to lose her job,
As a result, she says she
suffers from shock, fright
and mortification.
The lawsuit also con-
tends that The Jewish
subjected Ms.
News
Gardin to sexual discrimi-,
nation, sexual harass-
ment, retaliation for filing
a worker's compensation

claim and intentional
infliction of emotional dis-
tress.
"Curt DeLoye is an inte-
gral part of the growth
and success of The Jewish
News," Mr. Horwitz said.
"He is an employee of the
highest caliber who has
been with us for 15 years."
"The things that are
being said are out-
landish," Mr. Horwitz
said. "We will pursue any
and all means, both to
defend our position and
retain the reputation that
we have built over the'
past 50 years in the
Jewish community and
outside of it.
"We have loyal, dedicat-
ed, professional staff
whose commitment is to
present to our community
the best publication possi-
ble," he said. "Their dedi-
cation to that task
remains of paramount
importance and is their ,
primary focus."
The case has been-
assigned to Oakland
County Circuit Judge
Robert Anderson. 0
