ovah Feldshuh runs on
a self-winding watch,
without a second to
spare: Award-winning
actress, cabaret performer,
humanitarian, mom — in-
deed, Ms. Feldshuh is a
woman for our times.
And time is of the essence.
She is in a hurry, having to
run to school to pick up one
of her children, preparing for
an upcoming night-club act,
handling interviews for a
new movie, talking about a
new album of Sephardic
songs ("Mazel Buena") she
narrates, and readying
herself to go back on stage as
three of Henry NIA's wives
in a New York production of
Six Wives.
Leave it to Tovah to play
three roles where one is
challenge enough. But then,
the actress who has soared
as Peter Pan, donned a
yeshiva bucher's robes in
Yentl and spices her cabaret
act with a Catskill come-
dian's timing is a woman of
multiple personalities.
That's on the stage. Off,
she settles for one personali-
ty —warm and witty and
wonderful.
The movie A Day in Oc-
tober, st ar r in g Tovah
Feldshuh as a mother trying
to keep her Jewish family
intact in the face of the Nazi
monster rolling across World
War II Denmark, has open-
ed.
With all the openings she
has had during a busy ca-
reer, there is only one
spotlight that outshines all
the others. It is marriage
and family that have helped
define Ms. Feldshuh's ca-
reer. Married to a prominent
New York attorney,
Feldshuh has willingly
foregone national tours and
West Coast series com-
mitments to keep her com-
mitment to family ties in
New York.
Those ties are far from
constraints. "It's a question
of priorities," says the per-
former and mother of Garson
Brandon, 9, Amanda Claire,
4, and "Andrew, 12 going on
13."
_ She laughs, ever the

Time does fly, says Ms.
Feldshuh, who also recently
fit in appearances in the film
Tribeca and TV's "Citizen
Cohn" and "Law and Order"
on her busy schedule.
The law of the Hollywood
jungle is that one must be
within hailing distance to
order up a successful career.
Tovah Feldshuh doesn't feel
hampered being 3,000 miles
away.
"I am getting a tremen-
dous amount of work," she
says.
Indeed, while much of it
remains on the East Coast
by choice, Ms. Feldshuh is
not one to coast. When re-
cently offered a starring role
in A Day in October, Ms.
Feldshuh packed up her ex-
perience for a 10-week stint
in Scandinavia.
But not before being cajol-
ed by her husband, who con-
vinced her to take the role.
She did, but made sure at
the same time that it would
be a family gathering. Hus-
band and kids joined her
during the shoot.
"My quest in life is to seek
balance," says Ms.
Feldshuh, whose family
seesaw is weighted by hus-
band - and children on one
end, career on the other. The
tilt will always be in favor of
family, she says.
But the seesaw, she says,
will never leave anyone up
in the air. Singer-actress
Tovah Feldshuh will hit the
high Cs on a Mediterranean
cruise next spring. Between
cruise-ship concerts, Tovah

will be able to join Andrew
and children to take in the
sights.
For years, critics have ap-
plauded Ms. Feldshuh's
many talents. She has never
lost sight, however, of hu-
manitarian responsibilities,
stemming from the Jewish
tradition of tzedakah.
Tovah Feldshuh is a past
recipient of the Israel Peace
Medal and the Eleanor
Roosevelt Humanitarian
Award for her commitments
to charitable and social con-
cerns.
Indeed, on this crisp day in
October, Ms. Feldshuh refers
to another October morning
nearly 50 years ago, one in
which Nazis stormed Den-
mark's streets, sweeping up
Jews for deportation.
A Day in October, which
tackles the topic of Danish
cooperation in saving that
nation's Jews, is especially
relevant today, says the ac-
tress.
"What the Danish did —
those individual acts of
heroism in standing up to
the Nazis — is the kind of
courage we need in today's
world," says Ms. Feldshuh,
who starred in the landmark
TV miniseries "Holo- caust,"
which won an Emmy Award
in 1978.
"We have got to figure out
how to preserve each other
in this world. Our only way
of survival is to get rid of
racism and moral tension as
a practical matter."
Tovah Feldshuh has faith
in interfaith and interracial
dialogue.
Complaints? Are you kid-
ding? No kvetching here.
"It's a wonderful life." ❑
