His decision to remain in Israel resulted in his being part of the coun- try's defense forces. While some service as- signments tapped his musical talents, others utilized his language skills as a foreign media liaison. "After the Six-Day War, Danny Kaye came to Israel to perform for the troops, and I was asked by the army to accompany him, be his interpreter, perform with him and introduce him," Mr. Burstyn recalled. "He was my idol so it was a tremendous expe- rience. He was in Israel for about a month, tour- ing army bases and hos- pitals. We became quite close." During the Gulf War in 1992, Mr. Burstyn left The Rothschilds to serve as a reservist with the Army Spokeman's Office. "When the war broke out, I got on a plane and went over," the enter- tainer reported. "I was able to be there for about a week and then come back into the show. I just couldn't sit in New York while that was going on. "Most frightening were the gas masks, especially the first time you put one on and had to sit in a sealed room not knowing what was going on out- side. "Everybody had a gas mask, and we had to keep them with us wher- ever we went. Then it became like normal, and it's strange how people can get accustomed to things like that. "People still have them. They were provid- ed by the Israeli govern- ment." Aside from his army service, he performs to raise money for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, which is like the USO. He has done a 2 1/2 hour telethon, which was broadcast Dec. 20 over the Jewish television network. Other causes impor- tant to him include the Israeli cystic fibrosis organization. He is presi- dent, becoming involved after a close friend died of the disease. He also is active with the United Jewish Appeal. As Mr. Burstyn pre- pares to portray business and entertainment ty- coon Mike Todd, reading biographical information and watching films, he remains enthusiastic about his enduring career: "This is my 40th year in show business, which is a long time. But I started as a kid, and so I feel very lucky to have been a performer for so many years and able to maintain an even level, not to have risen and fallen too quickly. "A lot of people have heard of me and have known me throughout the years, and I'm grate- ful to the audiences that still come and see me over and over again." ❑ Moscow Artist Opens Gallery Moscow artist Luda Tcher- niak will open the Luda Art Gallery in downtown Ro- chester. She also worked for the state Historical Museum develop- ing architectural renderings for historic Moscow church- es. She designed costumes and scenery for several state theatres of drama, opera, and ballet. The Luda Art Gallery is lo- cated at 103 B, East Fourth. Street, in downtown Roches- ter.
