hat better way to
start off the new
year than with a
new life? . . . How
about two new lives?
Maria's of Redford on
Grand River is no more .. .
and Settebello on Greenfield
has gone . . . but in name only.
Both are now one . . . as
Maria's of Southfield, on
Greenfield just south of 11
Mile Road . . . with the
Maria's of Redford menu at
the former Settebello location.
It's the former site of Na-
traj with Indian cuisine; Siz-
zling Crab and its seafood
attempts; and Settebello,
whose regional Italian fare
was too difficult for people to
understand.
This could finally be the
winner that has been hoped
for . . . with its traditional
Italian foods plus a few, not
many, of the understandable
favorites Settebello used to
have . . . But primarily and al-
most exclusively, it is the
same menu people used to
love so much when Maria's of
Redford was on Grand River
near Outer Drive.
Joan Orlando, former
Maria's of Redford owner, is
there every night seeing more
and more familiar faces of
folks who are saying, "Thank
heaven you're closer to us
now!" . . . They didn't relish
going to the Grand River spot
but the food and service were
magnetic draws.
No more regional Italian
food that people had to wince
at or furrow their brows try-
ing to comprehend . . . Now
it's good solid traditional
Italian.
Settebello owners Terry
and Aji Ahlwalia are not dupe
victims anymore . . . Maria's
of Southfield is as firm an op-
eration as the restaurant
building's foundation.
It is a pretty place, origi-
nally built as a Denny's, but
previously hardly worth the
effort of bring open.
On the other hand, Maria's
of Redford had tasted success
. . . It originally opened as a
carry-out pizzeria and was
taken over 12 years ago by
Joan and Carl Orlando, who
changed things around into a
popular, sitdown Italian
restaurant without unneces-
sary frills.
You know the Maria's
touch is there when that
round, full-size and uncut loaf
of garlic bread comes to your
table . . . And those who've
been to Maria's of Redford
will recognize their waitper-
son . . . Its entire staff has
joined Joan at Maria's of
Southfield.
Executive chef Don Schultz
and sous chef Jarvis McMor-
ris are thrilled to pieces .. .
The kitchen is so much more
conducive to better cooking
and quicker preparations
. . . They can now make their
own desserts, too, something
that couldn't be done at
Maria's of Redford because of
its lacking in facilities.
Waitpersons Maris Ple-
shakov, Mike Miller, Michelle
Beaulieu, Mike Beaulieu,
Tony Beaulieu, Jim Graham,
Bonnie Wallace and Jennifer
Rabid are all former Grand
River-ites, most of them since
it opened, together with man-
ager Buddy Orlando, bring-
ing back a lot of good
memories . . . Only Mel Lester
remains from the former Set-
tebello.
Some people miss the
checkered tablecloths at the
former Maria's of Redford on
Grand River, but like the
cloth-napkins look and espe-
cially the prices at Maria's of
Southfield . . . Although in a
more affluent area, the menu
pricing has not changed from
one place to another.
Plus the standard Italian
dishes, as at Maria's of Red-
ford, there's also pizza now at
Maria's of Southfield . . .
round, square or stuffed, to go
along with the more estab-
lished Italian favorites which
have won so many come-back
friends.
Even its own canolis and
cheesecake are made at
Maria's of Southfield . . .
something the former Grand
River location couldn't do be-
cause of its kitchen short-
comings.
A lot of folks are mighty
happy that one of their fa-
vorite dining spots has moved
to the northwest area, bring-
ing with it the culinary and
service talents so many have
enjoyed through the years.
Strolling gypsy musicians
and songstress are every Sat-
urday evening at Maria's of
Southfield . . . open six days
. lunch Tuesday-Friday and
dinner Tuesday-Saturday.
Seating is 157 in two rooms
. . . the dining room with its
rich, shiny black formica ta-
bles and well-padded booths
. . . and lounge of brasstop ta-
bles and padded booths, bur-
gundy-tufted napkins and
brass-top bar counter.
The changeover at former
Settebello is a very welcomed
one . . . You can't beat good,
traditional Italian food when
prepared and presented prop-
erly . . . And what a relief for
people to read a menu and or-
der with ease.
Maria's of Southfield oozes
with confidence . . . And why -
not? . . . Success is written all
over it.
IT'S PAST the rumor
stage . . . and closer to reality
that Joe Muer's, one of the na-
tion's most acclaimed seafood
operations, may come to
Southfield in 1993 . . . Pro-
posed site is the historic
Burgh house
. . . otherwise known as the
former Southfield Town Hall,
built between 1872 and 1873
on Berg Road just north of
Civic Center Drive . . . An ad-
Maria's takes over
the Settebello
location.
dition could make seating
around 180.
CONGRATS . . . to
Michael Fayne . . . on his 50th
birthday . . . celebrated with
a Matt Brady's-catered sur-
prise party by wife Susan at
Holiday Inn of Farmington
Hills.
EVEN THOUGH Mag-
num & Muer's has closed its
doors on Grand River because
of a stagnated business level
that didn't support operating
expenses, Chuck Muer and
daughter Susan, its general
manager, made certain none
of the help would be out of a
job . . . All were transferred to
Chuck's other restaurants in
the area . . . Big Fish, Meri-
wethers, Pals, Rocky's . . . Su-
san continues in dad's
operation as a marketing gal.
