WERE FIGHTING FOR
YOUR LIFE
American Heart
Association
him return to regular activi-
ties safely and with decreased
risk of re-injury. Although
treating and protecting the in-
jured area is of primary con-
cern, it's important to look
beyond the injury and keep
the rest of the body as fit as
possible. Hydro-Toning does
just that.
For many people, the Hy-
dro-Tone program is their
way to keep cardiovascular
fitness because it can easily
elevate the heart rate target
zone and be maintained there
for an uninterrupted period
of 15 to 20 minutes. Water
heated at 80 degrees dispers-
es body heat a lot faster than
air and helps to maintain
body temperature making it
easier to work harder and
more intensely without being
forced to stop and cool down.
This has the added effect of
increasing the comfort of the
exercise.
Another benefit of Hydro-
Toning is its role in weight
loss because the exercise pro-
gram can reduce fat as a
percentage of total body com-
position. Most people know
that low-intensity, aerobic ex-
ercise performed for 35-40
minutes uses body fat as an
energy source. What they
may not realize is that water
walking burns twice as many
calories as land walking be-
Gal
•
• Check your pulse rate
during your workout. Water
exercise can be deceptive
and you may not realize how
hard you're actually working
because there's no impact
and you're not sweating.
• Drink a glass of water
before you exercise because
you still are sweating even
though you may not notice
it.
• Pay attention to your
form as you exercise. Keep
your spine straight and tum-
my tucked in and land flat
on your foot, not on your toes
when you jog. Buoyancy
tends to get you up on your
toes.
• If you're working an
area because of an injury or
arthritis, keep the area sub-
merged when working be-
cause water takes the weight
off of it.
• Be sure to shower when
you finish Hydro-Toning to
remove the chlorine from
your skin and rinse your
bathing suit well from the
chlorine.
• Always consult a physi-
cian before developing an ex-
tensive workout program. ❑
cause of the water's greater
resistance.
Using the Hydro-Tone
equipment further increases
the calorie-burning resistance
of the water even more.
What's more, this same low-
intensity exercise may also
raise the metabolism for as
much as an hour after exer-
cise for additional calorie \
burning.
The experts agree that one
of the primary ingredients for
staying with an exercise pro-
gram is to enjoy the program.
Hydro-Toning fulfills not only
that requisite but provides a
safe, low-impact program,
that's easy to learn. ❑
Medical Center
Diabetes Study
The diabetes research pro-
gram at the Detroit
Medical Center and
Wayne State University is
now seeking participants
for a new study comparing
a human insulin deriva-
tive to currently available
regular insulin.
Researchers believe that
the human insulin analog
may lower a diabetic's
blood sugar level more
safely during and immedi-
ately after meals. In-
dividuals between the
ages of 35 and 85 who
have type II (non-insulin
dependent) diabetes melli-
tus who have not previ-
ously taken insulin injec-
tions for diabetes manage-
ment, or who have taken
insulin for less than two
months are eligible to par-
ticipate.

this study, call Melissa
Vandenberg, 745-1783.

Donations Aid
Care At Sinai
In 1985, when Alan and
Elaine Herbst lost their
14-month-old daughter,
Lisa Amy Herbst, in an
automobile accident, they
turned their tragedy into
help for others. By estab-
lishing the Lisa Amy
Herbst Memorial Fund to
benefit Sinai's Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit
(NICU), Sinai's youngest
and most fragile patients
can benefit from some of
the newest medical tech-
nology available.
Over the years, many
individuals have donated
to the Herbst Memorial. <
Most recently, the fund
has been used to purchase
an infant bed warmer and
two in-bed scales.
