MAKING WAVES

sistance to the body when
moving through the water.
This resistance strengthens
the muscles because it forces
them to work harder, making
water the ideal environment
for those who want to tone
and shape up, for those who
are training for a specific ath-
letic performance or for those
who need to get back in shape
after an injury.
"You weigh less in the wa-
ter than you do on land be-
cause water supports your
body," explains Ms. Johnson,
specialist in aquatic therapy.
"That means there's less pres-
sure on your knees and an-
kles or your elbows and wrists
as you move objects through
the water. The physical ben-
efits are enormous for people
who may have pain when
they move their arms and legs
or back. In the water, howev-
er, they can use their muscles
and feel little or no pain at all.
Someone, even with a serious
injury or debilitating arthri-
tis, is more likely to achieve
full range of motion for her
arms and legs if she's exer-
cising in the water than if she
were exercising in a gym or at
home on the floor."
This past summer it wasn't
unusual to see small groups
of people Hydro-Toning at
swim clubs, country clubs and
private pools throughout the
area. There is a very definite
social attraction to working
out in the water. Since know-
ing how to swim is not a re-
quirement for exercising in
the water, anyone can join the
group. Heads are always
above water and everyone is
chatting because no one is out
of breath while they move at
their own pace. Just to look at
the groups, you would think
they were just horsing around
and having fun rather than
exercising.
Ms. Pollack says the folks
in her water exercise group
call themselves a water-re-
covery group because they
talk so much and have be-
come friends over the years.
The conversation usually cen-
ters around their families and
life events as they push the
bells and kick the boots in the
water. It's not unusual to see
two or three of the ladies
meeting for lunch, shopping
together, arranging a trip to
the Eastern Market, or every-
one showing up at someone's
family bar mitzvah. It's not
unusual for Cindy Ackerman,
aerobics director at Franklin,
to call this social and gabby
bunch back to attention at the
pool so they can get on with
their Hydro-Toning.
According to Ms. Acker-
man, people use Hydro-Ton-
ing for myriad reasons: to
burn off extra calories, to get

in better shape, to get back in
shape after an injury or ill-
ness or to get in cardiovascu-
lar conditioning.
"Hydro-Toning is a great
way for a sedentary person,
who hasn't done much ath-
letically, to get started in a
good exercise program with-
out getting sore," explains Ms.
Ackerman. "Water creates its
own resistance so those exer-
cising establish their own
pace with the equipment; the
faster they move, the greater
the resistance. Deep water
walking, for instance, is great
training for cross-country ski-
ing. Pregnant women, on the
other hand, can also enjoy a
good workout without getting
overheated."
Hydro-Toning effectively
stimulates and stretches the
muscles because the positive
resistance inherent in water
exercise allows opposing mus-
cle groups to be worked in a
single set. The degree of re-
sistance experienced depends
upon the speed and direction

at which the Hydro-Tone
equipment is moved through
the water. The resistance is
proportional to the speed.
If Blanche moves the Hy-
dro-Tone equipment through
the water at twice her normal
speed, she encounters four
times the resistance. Moving
at four times the speed,
Blanche generates 16 times
the resistance. As always, the
resistance directly opposes
the direction of the move-
ment. It's easy to see how Hy-
dro-Tone exercise fits all
people, no matter their con-
dition. With accommodating
variable resistance, the user
automatically matches her
level of fitness. No matter
how weak or strong the per-
son is, the Hydro-Tone Sys-
tem matches the player's
ability.
Hydro-Toning also is used
by many well-known athletes
for cross-training purposes be-
cause it utilizes the muscles
an athlete wants to use in a
particular sport without short
changing other muscular ar-
eas. Sport-specific activities
