believe they have been
successful.
"There is a different
quality about buying por-
traits as opposed to art-
work," Ms. Yaker said.
"There is an urgency.
People are beginning to
realize photography of
one's children is not so
much a luxury as other
art forms."
Specialization was key
for Beth Singer.
Backed with a fine arts
degree, Ms. Singer has
made her mark on the
scene as a commercial
photographer, concentrat-
ing on composition, line,
movement, balance and
light in architecture and
interiors.
"Architecture is part of
fine art. Photographing it
is merely the continua-
tion," Ms. Singer said.
Ms. Singer chose to pho-
tograph places because
she was never comfortable
within a studio or any four
walls upon a regular
basis. In photographing
sites, Ms. Singer found a
whole new set of chal-
lenges each time the
scenery changed.
When Ms. Singer gradu-
ated from Eastern
Michigan University more
than 15 years ago, she had
one goal in mind — actu-
ally making a living with
her camera. Knowing the
reality of talented, yet
unemployed, artists, Ms.
Singer was determined to
set herself apart and
chose architecture as her
specialty.
"I control the space in
architecture. That's why I
went into this type of
work as opposed to sports
or news photography," Ms.
Singer said.
Accepting assignments
with smaller firms first,
Ms. Singer has built an
impressive list of clients
— Pella Windows, the
Prudential Town Center
— and boasts work in

Detroit Monthly, Style,
Home Ideas, and Builder
Magazine.
Timing, Ms. Singer
believes, was important
too. When she began her
work, only a handful of
photographers were work-
ing the architectural angle
of commercial photogra-
phy. No longer is that the
case.
"It's harder now. You
constantly have to be mar-
keting yourself," Ms.
