Rabbi Shapiro had been the spiritual leader of Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange, N.J., since 1972. He rose to national promi- nence in 1985, when he was elected president of the Con- servative movement's Rab- binical Assembly. That year, after a long his- tory of supporting equal rights for women in the pul- pit, Rabbi Shapiro was able to welcome the first woman into the 1,000-member rab- binic organization. An early activist in the civ- il rights movement, Rabbi Shapiro joined with other col- leagues in 1963 to participate in the protests in Birming- ham, Ala. In 1964, he was among the first American rabbis to protest the treat- ment of Jews in the Soviet Union. Rabbi Shapiro was one of the staff members of the Jew- ish Encyclopedia, to which he contributed more than 20 ar- ticles on Jewish history. Also Rabbi Shapiro served on the faculties of several in- stitutions, including Temple University, the University of the Negev in Beersheba and Hebrew University in Jeru- 3alem.
