"To me, the most dis- gusting thing about the situation is that Ms. Schott felt comfortable enough with her peers to make racist and anti- Semitic comments," Mr. Brown said. "She must have felt they wouldn't say anything. And they didn't for four years. "Team owners are busi- nesspeople that shape pub- lic opinion. By writing this letter, we are not accusing "Our concern is that such comments may have been spoken during a conference call with her fellow owners." Detroit team owners of anything, as they have not been mentioned in the alleged conference call, but rather, we are expressing our concern and hope to these individuals," he added. The letter, dated Dec. 10, 1992, and issued to Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, Lions owner William Clay Ford and Pistons owner Bill David- son, is in response to the racial slurs allegedly made by Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott. Included in the letter is the passage, "Our concern is not only that such com- ments have been allegedly made by a single ignorant individual, but the fact that these may have been spoken during a confer- ence call with her fellow owners. If this is true, it indicates that she felt com- fortable making these alleged comments to a group of prominent busi- nessmen who listened without comment." Jewish Community Council and the NAACP also urged Mr. Hitch, Mr. Ford and Mr. Davidson to use their role and status as sports team owners to publicly affirm their com- mitment to equal opportu- nity.
