Chicagoans Attend
Annual Aliyah Night
Chicago (JTA) — Reflecting
the recent increase in North
American aliyah, nearly 200
Chicagoans, mostly under
the age of 40, attended the
annual erev aliyah held here
last month.
The evening included
workshops, an Israel infor-
mation fair and speakers,
including Arthur Avnon,
consul general of Israel for
Chicago and the Midwest,
and Olga Rachmilevitch, ex-
ecutive director of the
Association of Americans
and Canadians in Israel.
The event was organized
by Iona Wishner Levenfeld,
chair of the Aliyah Council
of Greater Chicago, which is
supported by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Chicago, the Chicago Zionist
Federation and the Israel
Aliyah Center.
"I'm encouraged not only
by the number of people who
attended erev aliyah, but be-
cause there were over-
whelmingly new faces," said
Ephraim Bluth, new director
of the Israel Aliyah Center
for Chicago and the Mid-
west.
"We're in touch with 200
families. There will be an in-
crease to 150 olim from
Chicago in 1992 and we ex-
pect another increase in
1993," he said.
Asked about the new in-
terest in immigration to
Israel, Mr. Bluth said,
"Aliyah is a lifestyle deci-
sion. People choose a conve-
nient juncture in their lives
to make a switch."
Among those expressing
that view were Mario Braun,
23, an observant Jew living
on Chicago's North Shore.
"I am very seriously con-
sidering aliyah because
there's more substance to
life in Israel than in the
U.S.," he said.
The prospect of Mideast
peace in the 1990s makes
aliyah "even more inviting,"
Mr. Braun said.
Mr. Braun has visited
Israel three times and has
done a great deal of research
on aliyah at the local aliyah
center, but he is not leaving
just yet.
A 1991 graduate of the
University of Michigan, Mr.
Braun and a partner opened
an industrial design busi-
ness in Skokie, Ill., six mon-
ths ago.
He is committed to getting
this business off the ground
before making any decision.
I
Jeremy Schwartz, 22, a Nor-
th Shore resident, came to
erev aliyah "looking to
make connections for a job in --
Israel."
A graduate of the Univer-----
sity of Michigan with
degrees in Judaic studies
and political science, he
spent half of his junior year
studying at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
"I don't think in terms ofo
aliyah," he admitted, "but I, -
could eventually make` -
aliyah. It's gradual for me. I
feel more comfortable as a
Jew there."
Dr. Bruce Portnoy, a nor-
thwest suburban op-„
tometrist, has been con-
templating aliyah for
several years for himself, his
wife Linda, and two'
daughters, Leslie and Erica.
"Right now, the thing that
influences me the most is the
decline of Jewishness in the
U.S." For Mr. Portnoy, mak-
ing aliyah also is a gradual
process.
In his presentation to the
group, Mr. Avnon, who made
aliyah at the age of 4 from
Romania, said: "These past
44 years, the Jewish people_j
have been watching the me
most significant event (in
Jewish history) since the
Jews stood at Mount Sinai to
receive the Torah.
"Our people are being
reborn in the land of Israel.
"In Israel, the history of'
the Jewish people is being (=-
remade," Mr. Avnon said.
"Israel doesn't provide a bed
of roses but it does offer a de-
cent, good life and participa-
tion in an historic time.
"Having been an oleh, go-
ing to Israel is joining a close
family. Even if you don't
have relatives there, it's still
I
family."
