MCF Circle of Fellows holiday
party had to be mighty
pleased . . . both at the large
turnout and the enjoyment
everyone received from For-
bidden Christmas . . . The af-
fair was underwritten by Iry
and Olga Dworkin, Mary Lou
and Mort Zieve, Heidi and
Michael Stein, Pat and Jan
Hartmann, Dr. Don and Dale
Austin, Mary and Bob Matu-
ja and Mary and Ron
Lamparter.
Mary Lou remembering
back when she played the old
Vanguard Theatre which
Gem at one time had been .. .
Peter Loren, Opus One super
chef, doing his best to keep
food warm after being
prepared at the restaurant
. . . Gem has no kitchen .. .
and no doubt making sure
everyone used those great,
oversized Opus One plates
made solely for the fine
downtown Detroit restaurant
. . . Sydell and Doug Schubot,
Betty and Frank Ellias, Ar-
thur and Lorraine Schultz,
Debbie and Richard Partrich.
Bob Allison telling of being
at a loss for words the first
time in his life when recent-
ly told his son would make
him a grandfather . . . Wife
Maggie Allessee (Allison is
his radio name) wearing se-
quined holiday red . . . Car-
diologist Dr. Jerry and
Dorothy Timmis among the
nicest couples you'll want to
know . . . Dennis and Trudy
Archer already garnering
votes for his Detroit mayoral
campaign.
Iry Dworkin reminiscing
when he played trumpet in
Phil Brestoff band at the
Michigan Theatre with Hal
Gordon, piano; Marty Mit-
chell, sax; Iry Lewis, trumpet;
Dave Fenton, drums; Godall
"Mike" Plovan, sax; and
others . . . Wrapped cookies
given to everyone as they left,
with cookie-holics Mary Lou
and Mort Zieve not waiting to
get home . . . eating the yum-
mies while seated comfor-
tably in their parked car..
Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion is no small potatoes .. .
It employs 300 people, in-
cluding about 150 in
laboratory research and 80 in
epidemiology . . . all working
to develop new cancer
fighting discoveries and
treatments plus bringing
research findings to the pa-
tients who need them . . . In
1943, it was originally the
Detroit Institute of Cancer
Research . . . Today, about
60,000 square feet of its head-
quarters next to the Detroit
Medical Center and Cultural
Center is devoted to those
laboratories.
THE FORMER El Torito
Restaurant near T.G.I. Friday

on Evergreen, north of Civic
Center Drive (10 1/2 Mile), will
become a Ciao! dining spot
serving northern Italian food
at popular prives . . . it will be
owned by Mainstreet Ven-
tures (D. Dennisons's etc.),
with hopes for a March 30
opening.
RECENT ITEM! in Detroit
Free Press brought confusion
to many . . . Elliot I.
Schubiner is not the Elliott C.
Schubiner mentioned . . . One
spells his name with a single
"t" and the other uses two
"ts" . . . Elliot I. is married to
Lorraine Schubiner, national
City of Hope board of direc-
tors vice president and retired
. . . Elliot C. is wed to Lila,
and is active in real estate.
HE LIKES "sliders," the
greasier the better his ham-
burger . . . She likes caviar.
But it was Barry Solomon's
50th birthday, so his surprise
party by wife Linda took
precedent.
He walked into the little
but popular Hunter House
Hamburgers on Woodward
and Maple in Birmingham
and looked shocked as about
30 frieends yelled "Happy
Birthday!" . . . Barry says he
wasn't surprised, though .. .
not quite . . .He figured
something was up . . . Linda
never ever goes with him to a
hamburger place.
As balloons galore hung in
bunches fromt he ceiling and
people yanked on the silver
streamers, folks ate popcorn,
veggie dip, hamburgers, fries,
chilli fries, etc. . . . and danced
"The Hustle" along with
other frenzied foot stomping
to the upbeat cassette music.
Of course a birthday cake
. . . with icing figures of
Macho Man (Barry's a wrestl-
ing nut) and their dog Ram-
bo . . . "Don't cut Rambo!"
said Barry as mother-in-law
Mona Rappaport neatly sliced
the cake for everyone.
The evening was very novel
and so appropos . . . Those
"sliders" Barry gulped down
with eye-rolling pleasure
must have tasted doubly good
. . . Now he can say that Lin-
da went with him.
CONGRATS . . . to Max
and Esther Rubin . . . on their
54th anniversary . . . and to
Esther on her birthday.
EVERY YEAR the an-
niversary of Berline Group
advertising is a mystery .. .
partners Jim Berline and
Michelle Horowitz don't tell
their employees until the very
last moment where they're
going . . . And following the
celebration Jim ammounces
the recipient of the "I'll Be
Damned!" award, actually
employee of the year . . . art
director Bob Medici was 1992
honoree. ❑
