Editor's note: The lives of
Jews here and overseas
are touched by the agen-
cies of the Jewish Fed-
eration of Metropolitan
Detroit. This article is one
of a series that illustrate
how the Federation agen-
cies help, supported by
contributions to the Allied
Jewish Campaign,
All it took was one
phone call and Sam Miller
was on his way to new
educational heights at his
new school.
When the Miller family
moved to a new neighbor-
hood in Oak Park two
years ago, Sam's mother
contacted the Jewish
Information Service to
find out about the special
education department in
their new Berkley school
district. "Calling JIS made
it so much easier to find
out about the program,"
she said.
"Matching people with
resources is the job of the
Jewish Information Ser-
vice," according to Carol
Kaczander, director of
JIS. "When you dial 967-
HELP, your questions are
answered."
Twelve-year-old Sam
was born with Down syn-
drome, a chromosome ab-
normality that causes
developmental disabili-
ties.
Guided by JIS, Judy
and Greg Miller, Sam's
parents, were able to
enroll him in the special
education program right
away. "Now, he wants to
learn, and he works hard
to learn as much as he
can," said Mrs. Miller.
"Sam is a teacher's
dream because he loves to
read and they don't have
to tell him to do so. He
plays in a soccer league,
and he learned to read on
his own. He also reads
Hebrew, understands
some of the words and he
sometimes leads prayers
in synagogue," she said.
According to Mr. Miller,
Sam learned sign lan-
guage in one day, when an
instructor demonstrated
signing before the group.
The next day, he was
spelling out names and
teaching his classmates
and sisters, Aviva, 6, and
Elizabeth, 7, how to sign.
JIS has handled nearly
17,000 calls since it was
established in 1985. "JIS

Sam Miller

is ike a clearinghouse for
information," said Mrs.
Miller. "I told a neighbor
to contact JIS about
enrolling her 1-year-old in
special education. That
child is now moving on
and may not need special
education beyond pre-
school," she said.
"If the Millers didn't
have a Jewish Information
Service to call, it would
have been that much
harder for Sam to learn,"
said Ms. Kaczander.
A community resource
and referral service, JIS
had addresses, facts about
Jewish life and a directory
of social welfare agencies.
Its Text Telephone links
persons with hearing
impairments to a variety
of services. In addition,
the new TT is available to
the public by appoint-
ment. For older adults
needing transportation to
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Jewish Community Cen-
ter, JIS arranges door-to-
door bus rides.
Supported by contribu-
tions to the Allied Jewish
Campaign, JIS operates
out of the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Jewish Community
Center, Monday-Friday,
9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
JIS can be reached by
dialing 967-HELP (967-
4357), or (TT) 967-0460.

The rich variety of Israel's
flora and fauna reflects its
location at the junction of
three continents. Over 400
species of birds, 200 species
of mammals and reptiles and
3,000 varieties of plants are
found within its borders.
