ATTENTION

tioners. Joseph's insight,
which enabled him to become
reconciled to his past, is
wonderfully captured by
Shechem as the location of
Joseph's final resting place.
Schechem is where Joseph's
brothers committed an earlier
outrage against the innocent
inhabitants of that city,
following the rape of their
sister Dinah by the prince of
the city.
The second demystification
for Joseph was of Egypt itself.
Having sampled its fare, he
understood that he would not
reject it, but neither would he
ever again embrace it to the
exclusion of his primary
loyalties and affections. This
double demystification placed
God at the center for Joseph
and helped him survive his
ordeal, just as it helped the
children of Israel live through
the vicissitudes of their
history to stand at Mt. Sinai
and receive in words and
specific commandments God's
fresh revelations.
Our present day Jewish
community, of course, is no
different. We, too, are ad-
justing our perspectives about
our legacies from different
sources, and we are trying to
find our way to hear a fresh
revelation for us this day.
That it means to be Jewish
has been demystified for us
many times over this and the
previous century. It is no ac-
cident why this Torah portion
- ---- and the Joseph story is
always read around the week
of Chanukah, with its theme
of rededication and revitaliza-
tion. 0
