The only thing people are in agree- ment about is that it was a long time ago. These are the years folks disagree on when talking of when Modern Delicatessen first opened on Fenkell. It was a yesteryears favorite that many former customers still remember . . . recalling the pictures of old Detroit on its walls . . . Max Kruegel's mother, the "honor system" cashier . . . Nobody got a check, just told her what they ate . . . and some of the things like a corned beef sandwich were a different price each day . . . But customers seem- ed to know, or thought they did, that "Ma" Kruegel made it up on something else. Modern Deli on Fenkell burned down and Max rebuilt it in 1967 . . . However, his old pictures and menus went with the fire and could never be replaced. That same year, 1967, brothers George and Dick Gunsberg bought Modern and besides running the delicatessen, also took over next door to pickle and package the corned beef they sold to supermarkets. The present owner, Kelly Eter, became its owner in 1986 . . . and today has the biggest challenge of his lifetime . . . the maintenance of a time-honored name and reputation. His second Modern Deli opened Oct. 1 of this year on Greenfield north of 10 Mile, near the 1-696 Expressway in Oak Park, seating 70 and already getting the once-over from customers who remember when. Modern Deli of Oak Park may not have the longevity reputation of the original but in many respects is better .. . For one, the corned beef sand- wiches are much larger .. . not four-and-a-half or five ounces, but closer to six and seven . . . And the talent of its chef on traditional Jewish cooking is as long as her name. . . Matta Perepletehikov. But probably the biggest asset Modern Deli of Oak Park has going for it is the service . . . They don't come much better than Lottie Zawol, Bernice Mazor or Car- rie Kaufman . . . three gals with a lot of smiling ex- perience to go with their cor- dial efficiency. Lottie is the team's senior . . . a top-notch delicatessen gerver of 30 years, starting when Joe Cohen and George Fink had the original Joey's at this location . . . then George buying it from Joe and calling the deli Danny's . . . and Dick Lichtman tak- ing over with the name Nor- thgate Deli . . . followed by Dave Raben with Matt Pren- tice as his counterman .. . Matt bought the place from Dave and called it Deli Uni- que . . . never realizing that one day he would be owner of the seven-operation Unique Restaurant Corp. . . . This was followed for a very short period by an operation called Deli & Co. And there's Sally Cymerint, too, with the big smile, fast ef- ficiency in seating people as a good hostess should . . . and the ability to make quick friends . . . Sally was hostess 16 years at Irving's Deli before going to the former Jacques and then Deli Uni- que for Matt. The Modern Deli of yesteryears is a fond memory that had many good at- tributes to remember such as meeting people . . . but Kel- ly's second Modern on Green- field in Oak Park has that ex- tremely important restaurant trait . . . employee teamwork. Everybody seems to work together in the ultimate goal of trying to please with each effort . . . Lottie and Bernie are from the old school of waitressing . . . No such thing as passing by a table or booth in need of coffee because it wasn't their station . . . And when was the last time you saw another waitperson other than your own bring water to the table? These little things are in the mold at Modern of Oak Park because of their ex- perience and Kelly's in' sistence upon the best he can offer . . . The quality of a good restaurateur and his product is always better with this asset. Matta has been at the same locale 13 years, cooking for its owners with a lot of kitchen know-how .. . Of all the wonderful Jewish dishes she makes, Matta wants you to try her gefilte fish . . . There's a twinkle in her eye as if to say, "I do something dif- ferent" . . . Matta's Jewish culinary treats are still another thing that will bring people back to Modern of Oak Park besides the name and reputation. It's a clean place, with fresh carnations, hanging pictures and plants, mirrors„ most of the booths recovered, etc. People like Bernie and Edith Hoffman, among others, remember Modern Deli of yesteryears on Fenkell .. . and say it was never like this . . . They didn't frequent Modern number one as often as today at location number Probably the biggest asset Modern Deli of Oak Park has going for it is the. service. two . . . Bernie and Edith sometimes go back three and four times a week now. The name was magic . . . It stood for an institution .. . However, in the restaurant business, reputation is only as good as the last meal served. This is why Modern Deli of Oak Park stands to succeed . . . It lives for today and tomorrow. CONGRATS ... to Linda and Howard Nudell . . . on their 25th anniversary.
