sympathetic audience, the
Institute for Historical
0 Research. He wrote the note
on stationery with the let-
terhead of a group called St.
Raphaels-Verein, which Mr.
Steinberg of the WJC de-
scribed as a Holocaust-
. . denial group. Mr. Brentar
0. signed the letter as presi-
dent of the group.
But the Munich-based in-
stitute is one of the most
respected, mainstream
facilities for World War II
research in Germany.
Mr. Brentar could not be
reached by the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency. But he told
the New York Times that the
"letter was just ex-
ploratory." He denied that
his note gave credence to
prosecution charges that Mr.
p.
Demjanjuk had been in
Treblinka.
He said, "The only way to
get any information is by ac-
cepting there must have
been something. And I
would like to have that
something or copy of that
something so I can make my
own decision whether the
man is guilty or not."
Mr. Brentar was dismissed
as co-chairman of an ethics
coalition for George Bush's
• . 1988 campaign on charges of
anti-Semitism.
He denied he was anti-
Semitic but told the Times,
1 10 "Hitler could not have ac-
complished what he did ac-
complish in the so- called
Holocaust if it wasn't for the
full-hearted cooperation of
the Jews themselves."

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Government archaeologists,
under pressure from haredi,
or fervently Orthodox, Jews,
have agreed to rebury
2,000-year-old bones
together with their ancient
coffins.
But they said their agree-
ment to do so under a corn-
promise plan "will not be
considered a precedent:'
Accord on reburial of re-
mains found at a dig in the
French Hill neighborhood of
Jerusalem last week was
reached in talks between
Interior Minister Arye Deri,
leader of the haredi Shas
party; Jerusalem Chief
Rabbi Yitzhak Kulitz; the
Israel Antiquities Depart-
ment; and the Jerusalem
municipality.
It followed the outbreak of
rioting among haredi corn-
munities in Jerusalem and
Bnei Brak over excavation of
ancient burial caves in
French Hill.
