Laborite Offers
Talks Challenge
"
Jerusalem (JTA) — Labor
Party Knesset member Yael
Dayan has called on the
Israeli government to either
negotiate with the Palestine
Liberation Organization or
pull out of the peace talks
entirely.
"The Palestinians have an
authoritative leadership,"
Ms. Dayan told the Knesset
Foreign Affairs and Defense
Committee. "We should talk
to it — or stop talking alto-
gether."
Her proposal was the
boldest statement made yet
by a member of the dovish
faction of the Labor Party
that favors an overture to
PLO leader Yassir Arafat.
Ms. Dayan said there was
"nothing holy" about the
decision to exclude the PLO
from the current peace pro-
cess begun in Madrid 13
months ago, since Israel's
conditions for joining the
talks were made by a Likud
prime minister, Yitzhak
Shamir, "who wanted
neither the Madrid con-
ference nor indeed the Camp
David agreement itself."
Ms. Dayan, whose father,
Moshe Dayan, and grand-
father, Shmuel Dayan, also
served in the Knesset, said
attempts to nurture "a local
Palestinian leadership,
divorced from the leadership
outside, are doomed to
failure."
Canadian
Arrested
Toronto (JTA) — The arrest
of a Windsor, Ontario, man
on war crimes charges has
revived hope among Jewish
groups here that Canada
will reinvogorate its flagg-
ing effort to bring Nazi war
criminals to justice.
Radislav Grujicic, 81, was
charged with 10 counts of
premeditated murder and
one count each of conspiracy
to murder and kidnap.
His indictment says that
as a senior official of a spe-
cial section of the Belgrade
police in wartime Serbia
from June 22, 1941, to Oct.
1, 1944, he conspired with
civil authorities and the
German occupying forces in
the arrest and interrogation
of suspected communists.
As a result of Mr. Gru-
jicic's activities, his victims
were deported to Germany
and elsewhere for forced
labor. Ten people are alleged
to have been shot in
Belgrade on May 25, 1943.
